Howe-Peterson Funeral Home Obituary

Melvin C. Hodder, "Mel", of Dearborn, passed away on August 20, 2019 at the age of 92.

Married to the love of his life, Betty, for just shy of 70 years in November.

Loving father of Edward (Laura), Henry (Lois), Cheryl (Daniel) Ballnik, and Jeffrey (Pam).

Cherished grandfather of Julie Dennis, James, Henry, Jr., Evan Ballnik, Kristianna Ballnik, Kristy McClain, and Joshua Jenkins.

Great grandfather of Trevor Dennis, Nicole Dennis, Alex, Raeann, Matthew McClain, Grace Galloway, Dean Jenkins, and Levi Jenkins.

Great-great grandfather of Leo.

Magic was a big part of Mel’s life and he was well known for his magic tricks. He was a proud member of the International Brotherhood of Magicians. He would do magic shows at church functions and parties, he was most happy entertaining people.

Mel loved animals and had doves and rabbits as pets. These doves and rabbits were also part of his magic show.  His children would raise and take care of the doves and the rabbits.

Mel also loved to travel.  The family would pack up their popup camper and hit the road for a fun adventure.  They had a lot of fun going to different parks and attractions all across America.  In his later years, he and his beloved wife, Betty, would pack up their RV and spend time in Florida.

He was a proud Navy veteran. Mel served during World War II where he searched for explosives. He was on a small vessel called a mine-sweeper boat, which would travel the treacherous ocean waters in search of mines in the water.

He was most happy when with his family. He enjoyed hunting trips with the Rutenbar family – however – he shot more videos and photos than guns.  He really loved working with Betty at the Greenfield Village.  They worked there together for over 10 years.

Mel always had a great time, no matter what he was doing.  He could make any event fun and anyone who ever met him will always remember how fun he was.

He loved life and lived a full and happy life. He had many blessings.

Funeral service at 10AM on Saturday, August 24, at the Dearborn Chapel of Howe-Peterson Funeral Home, 22546 Michigan Ave.

Not sure what to say?

I was introduced as Henry, number two son. A name my dad called me with pride in his voice. I never showed it, but the love was clear whenever he said it.
He was gentle and kind and I hope that my life has been the same.
Dad gave me a chance to have thousands of experiences. He called us gypsies and we camped almost everywhere in this country.
We built fantastic boats and hundreds of bird houses for the boy scouts to sell. Showing me woodworking and later in life I was a trim...

Melvin was my first cousin and though I have never met him I feel that we would have enjoyed each others company. His father Uncle Charlie and my father Stephen were brothers. They were both born in Grates Cove, NL and both migrated to Michigan as young men along with another brother Cecil.... My father returned to NL about 12 years later and started work in the fishery industry with his father. Growing up I remember our many visits from Uncle Charlie and his tales about life in Michigan and...

May God bless you and your family in this time of sorrow.

May the love of friends and family carry you through your grief.

Peace be with you and your FAMILY
