Mohammed Bassiouni

CAIRO (AP) — Mohammed Bassiouni, a former Egyptian ambassador to Israel, has died in Cairo. He was 74.

Egypt's MENA state news agency quoted his son Hatem as saying Bassiouni died Sunday at home.

Bassiouni, a former military officer, served as coordinator between the Egyptian and Syrian armies in the 1973 war with Israel and as a member of the joint Egyptian-Syrian command.

Egypt and Israel signed a peace deal in 1979. Bassiouni served in the Egyptian Embassy in Tel Aviv in 1982 and became ambassador in 1986. He was recalled in 2000 in protest of Israel's measures while confronting the second Palestinian uprising.

After his return, Bassiouni was appointed deputy head of the Foreign Relations Committee in Egypt's Shura Council, parliament's upper house.

"My thoughts and prayers are with the Bassiouni Family in their time of grief. At times like these, "God can give us power beyond what is normal," so we can keep going from one day to the next.

To the family of Mohammed Bassiouni, you have my deepest sympathy for the loss of your beloved one. May you find comfort at Isaiah 57:15.(Erma L. Davis, Park Forest, IL.)

Like the wise man Job, Mohammed Bassiouni can say: “If an able-bodied man dies can he live again? All the days of my compulsory service I shall wait, until my relief comes. You will call, and I myself shall answer you. For the work of your hands you will have a yearning." We can all look forward to a time when God will call and we will answer.

As the days and weeks pass, and as you return to life's routine, may you continue to feel comforted by the love and support of family and friends.

To the the family of Mohammed Bassiouni - May God give you peace and comfort through his word and the Lord Jesus Christ during this time of sorrow, I know that he will be missed by many.

Welcome home my friend, from so much suffering
Welcome home my friend, step out of the pain
It’s ok to cry, we've all seen tears before
Its ok my friend welcome home

Talk of love one’s lost, so many years ago
And how you hurt inside, till no more tears would flow
Let the healing start, you can't...
