Not sure what to say?

I´m so sorry to hear of Norm´s passing today 12/16/24. Kieran and I loved having Norm and Mary as neighbors. We certainly would have payed our respects had we known. Hugs for you Mary, Kieran and Glo

I am so sorry to read about Norm's passing. I was a junior at WMU when he taught a honor's seminar on "The Journey in Literature." It's a subject that is still close to my heart. In fact, I think I'll reread "Childe Harold's Pilgrimage," a poem he assigned, in his honor. My sincere condolences to Mary and her family.

I am so sorry to hear of that Norm has passed. Mary is my first cousin and together she and Norm have they always held a special place in my family. Even though we did not see them often. they always found time to visit with my mother as she aged. Over the years I have always looked forward to Norm's annual letter that he and Mary included with their Christmas card. His writing style was witty and enjoyable. I have kept all of them. My sincere condolences to Mary and her family.

I smile when I think of Norm´s quiet demeanor. I have fond memories of Norm and Mary´s is it while we were in sabbatical in Santander, Spain. The Carlson´s warm welcome to our family when we moved to Kalamazoo is another treasure. RIP.

Norm was Director of Undergraduate Programs in the English department at Western Michigan University for many years. I eventually succeeded him in that position, and he was a great mentor for me. His enormous knowledge of both department and university programs--and more that this, his great humanity--helped hundreds of English majors and minors navigate university requirements and make their way to graduation. He was a great co-worker, friend, and human being.

Mary and family, sincerest condolences from Godfrey Grant & Laurie Kaniarz. Norm was a peach of a guy, and together you and he, Mary, were a peach of a couple. A funny story: I (Laurie) was behind Norm in the food line at Monica Galligan's funeral. A glance out of the corner of my eye at the white beard and white hair confirmed (in my mind) that I was standing next to Godfrey. I gave him a quick peck on the cheek. Norm turned around, startled, and I was startled right back! Then of course we...

My deepest condolences to the Carlson family. I grew up in the Parkwood neighborhood and spent time playing sports with Paul. Thinking of your family.

My deepest condolences to the Carlson family. I lived across the street from Norm and Mary for several years. They were the best neighbors and friends. Hearing about their travels has been inspiring. Always the most gracious, kind and caring people. He will be missed.

Dr. Carlson inspired me, an English major, to dig deeper into literature, language, and the human experience. His direction to "get to the primary sources" prompted me to become a librarian. His guidance was life-changing. Peace to his family and friends. Virginia Rosser, grad student, 1972
