PHILIP KEMP Obituary

PHILIP L. KEMP, 73, returned to his heavenly home on Saturday, Oct. 29, 2016. His devotion to his family and friends, and his firm belief in God, supported him in his health struggles and ultimately gave him peace. Born July 12, 1943, in Evansville, Ind., Phill was a son of the late Grester and Florence Kemp. He was immersed in the Christian community from an early age. He became active in his Christian walk in the 1990s. He graduated from the University of Evansville. He worked for Kmart as a manager and buyer for 25 years. Phil was a servant at heart. He was kind and soft-spoken, but he also connected with others with his great sense of humor. He always took the time to reach out to others, and he supported multiple groups and missions through his generosity of time and financial support. He is dearly missed by his friends and loved ones who celebrate the fact that he is rejoicing with his Creator. Phil is survived by his wife, Patti; daughters, Rebekah (Matt) Elder and Jackie (Darrick) Engelman; grandchildren, Cameron and Micah Elder and Drew and Preston Engelman; and sister, Ann (Bud) Herron. He was also preceded in death by his sister, Mary Jane Kemp; and brother, Jim (Joni) Kemp. Memorial service is 11 a.m. Friday at The Chapel, 2505 W. Hamilton Road S., Fort Wayne, with calling from 10 to 11 a.m. Memorial calling also from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the church. The family requests that any donations be made to Visiting Nurse, who supported Phil and the family during Phil's final days, or to missions at The Chapel.

Patti, Rebekah and Jackie

Sadden to hear of Phil's passing. He was a good person and friend. He loved each of you very much. I feel very grateful having known Phil. We first met many years ago at DePauw Church. We stayed in contact through our good friends Larry, Mary pat and Sam. Occasionally we would talk by phone, sometimes for 10 minutes other times for an hour or more. Actually, I did most of the listening. Glad we were able to get together in August.

Hope you find some comfort in the certainty that Phil will always be with each of you and the love he shared will forever be a part of your life.

Patti, I loved Phil and I looked so forward to every Monday, Wednesday and Friday to spend an hour with him at Rehab...we were together for the last 8 years. We loved talking to each other, we laughed a lot...he would always be done early and would go out and sit in the lobby with Rick and have discussions that covered ever subject from the funniest to the most serious. For sure we will both miss Phil, but know he is with his lord. Prayers for you and your family. Lucy and Rick Briley

I loved Phil and his desire to serve God. He prayed for people during the Celebrate Recovery meetings. He often did not feel well but came anyway to encourage others. Will miss you dear Brother.

Dear Patti, I am sorry to hear that Phil lost this last health battle. Stan has been keeping me up to date on the gravity of his condition. I will always remember him as the "college joker" and as the guy who loved his family. The Lord will certainly appreciate having Phil in his presence. Blessings to you and the girls.
