Philip Utley Obituary

Philip Anthony Utley

Mount Juliet, TN

Age 64, passed away on Monday, November 9, 2015.

He was born on May 2, 1951, in Jackson, Tennessee, the son of the late James Harold Utley and Louise Sanderson Utley. Philip had numerous accomplishments in his life, as he never let any grass grow under his feet. At 21 years of age, he wed the love of his life, Pamela Kiddy Utley. He proudly served our country in the United States Navy. While he and Pam lived in Pensacola, Florida, he worked as a captain at the volunteer firefighter department and began his career with HCA. They relocated to Tennessee where Philip continued to work for HCA and eventually became the Director of Network Communications. At 55 he retired, but still yearned to stay busy. Philip found an interest in model railroading and became very involved in the hobby. Philip never met a stranger, and was quite the animal lover. He found beauty and God in everything he was surrounded by. He will be dearly missed by all who knew him.

He is survived by his loving wife of 42 years, Pam Utley; three brothers, Presley Connie Hudson and his wife, Ginge; James Harold Utley Jr. and Greg Utley; a niece and nephew, Mitzi Hudson Purvis and her husband, J, and Scott Hudson and his wife Ria; his father-in-law, Henry Kiddy; brother-in-law, Jackie Kiddy; one niece and four nephews, Catherine, Hudson, Jack, Will and Luke Purvis; a special four-legged feline friend, Maxwell, and host of other relatives and friends.

A gathering of family and friends will be held on Saturday, November 14, 2015, from one until three o'clock in the afternoon at Woodlawn-Roesch-Patton Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the PetSmart Charities Foundation in memory of Philip.

I was a guest at the Memorial Service and I saw that he was loved by so many people. Neighbors stopped us on the street as we were leaving his home and expressed their sympathy. My thoughts and prayers are with his wife, Pam -- his brothers, sisters-in-law, nephews, nieces -- his father-in-law, brother-in-law & all his many, many friends, work and hobby relations and acquaintances......

My thoughts and prayers are with all of Phil's family and many friends. I have known Phil for almost 40 years, serving for several years as a fellow firefighter in Escambia County Florida along side him. We have maintained our friendship from a distance since his move to Nashville.

Phil was always a very true and genuine friend to me. I had the opportunity to see him at least once a year on my annual trips to Nashville. Phil always made it a point to get us together during those trips, and we relived so many good memories. Recently I was able to spend time with Phil last month, twice, during multiple visits to Nashville. I was always blessed with his wonderful, friendly and caring personality.

Pam, I am so sorry for your loss. I am also very sorry that I will not be able to make the trip back up tomorrow for the service. Please do know that my family is praying for yours in this difficult time. Let me know if we can do anything.

In Christ's Love,

Jeff Payne and family

My thoughts and prayers are with your entire family. Phil was such a sweet man. I had the pleasure of meeting and talking to Phil at the Ferry Pass Volunteer Fire Department banquet a few years back. His love and passion for life and family was amazing. Many blessings and prayers for peace as you all go through this time. ♡

I first met Phil many years ago thru some model railroading event or activity. After I retired in January 2007, I joined Phil, James (JD) Brooks & Wayne Frey at Gene Caldwell's home for weekly Wednesday night operating sessions on Gene's HO model railroad. Those were very enjoyable times. Those enjoyable times then extended to operating sessions at Pete Hoadley's home, on the large HO scale railroad in Nolensville, on JD's home railroad & then more recently with Wayne, JD & Phil up in KY at Clay Smith's HO railroad. Phil was most knowledgeable, always willing to help out a fellow model railroader and was excellent as our group's unofficial social director........ I will miss the most our recurring lunch gatherings at H&T's Rstaurant, Moss's Restaurant in Clarksville & Buffalo Wind Wings.

Phil has met his last call...... He has made his last run..... Godspeed, my friend...... May you rest in peace.

Phil and I have only know each other for the last eight years or so but once we met it didn't take long for us to become best of friends. Since we were both avid model railroaders we had much in common. We travelled together to go to op sessions, bounced ideas off each other, and always had a great time when we were together. When I had a problem, he was my go to guy, especially on all things electronic. He, and a group of three others, have been coming to our home to run my trains for at least eight years, if not longer. It won't be the same without him.
