For several weeks I led the Shepherd's Center veterans' group that Melissa Smith refers to in Writing Stories From Your Life. Ralph announced on the first day that he did not write; his wife did that for him. Then he came in with a beautiful story that began on a snowy Christmas Eve in New England and segued into crawling on frozen ground on another Christmas Eve in the Battle of the Bulge. I will never forget his story.

Ralph was so special to me. He attended my Veteran's Fellowship at The Shephard's Center of Winston-Salem for years and he and CG became two of my favorite people. He was one of the most humble accomplished men I have ever had the pleasure of knowing. My interview of him for Storycorps is one of the most memorable moments of my life. My thoughts and prayers are with his friends and family.

I last talked with Ralph just a couple of weeks ago, he sounded good we talked about his illness, and what we were both doing. Thank the good lord for telling me to call him.
