Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Philadelphia - Randy Cain, a founding member of the soul group the Delfonics, which had such hits as "La La Means I Love You," has died. He was 63. Cain's death Thursday at his home in Maple Shade, N.J., was confirmed by investigator Rob O'Neal of the Burlington County medical examiner's office, who declined to release other details. Brothers William and Wilbert Hart and Cain formed the group while attending Philadelphia's Overbrook High in the 1960s. The group, one of the earliest to define the smooth, soulful "Philadelphia sound," won an R&B Grammy in 1970 for their song "Didn't I Blow Your Mind This Time." Cain left the group in 1971 but returned for a later version of the group. "I'm gonna miss him. We grew up together since 1968," Wilbert Hart told the Philadelphia Daily News. He said he last saw Cain four or five months ago. Chuck Gamble of Philadelphia International Records said Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff "have fond memories of working with Randy and the group."

I knew Randy very well in the mid-70's. He was quite a jocular guy with a smile that would light up the room. I listen to the Delfonics quite often - their soulful harmonizing, and silky tones delivered mesmerizing lyrics that I will cherish forever. Loved you then, and still do - RIP Randy.
