Raymond "Ray" Mitchell

1924 - 2018

Raymond Adams Mitchell, 93, known to friends as "Ray," passed away peacefully on April 29, 2018, at the Hospice Care Center in Port Orange, FL. Ray was born to James and Ruth Adams Mitchell on October 3, 1924 in St. Clairsville, Ohio, and was raised in Cadiz, Ohio. He was a proud World War II veteran, serving in the 4th Armored Division that earned distinction spearheading General Patton's Third Army in the European theater of World War II. He saw action in a number of major campaigns, including the D- Day Invasion of France, the Battle of the Bulge and the Battle of Central France. Among his many decorations and battle stars was an award of the Legion of Honor by the French government. During the war, Ray and his family moved to Cleveland, Ohio, where he worked for 43 years as an engineer for the Pitney Glass division of General Electric. He was active in local community and church affairs, serving as a Deacon for the Heights Presbyterian Church of Cleveland Heights. He was a dedicated and avid fan of the football program of The Ohio State University. In 1985 Ray and his wife Kathryn moved to Ormond Beach, Florida where they were members of the Christ Presbyterian Church. Ray sang in the church choir well into his 90s and also was the President of the Ormond Beach Trails Association. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 66 years Kathryn and by a brother Glenn. We are comforted by knowing Raymond had a strong faith, but he will be missed. He is survived by his son Richard (Gail Crimmins) of Hillsborough, New Hampshire, daughters Karen Lowder (Stephen) of Lansing, Michigan and Susan Fitzgerald of Ormond Beach. He also leaves behind a sister Martha Ellen Stapleton, seven grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren. The celebration of his life will be held Saturday, June 2, 11:00a.m. at Christ Presbyterian Church, 1035 W Granada Blvd., Ormond Beach, FL 32174. In his memory donations may be made to the Christ Presbyterian Church music program.
