Charles Adams was born on March 23, 1940, in Birmingham, Alabama, to Charles E. Adams and Mary Lee Walker. He departed this world on April 23, 2025, to join his Lord and Savior.

After graduating from high school in his hometown, Charles joined the United States Army in 1959 and served his country for 23 years achieving the rank of MSG. Throughout his military career, MSG Adams received numerous commendations and decorations for his exemplary service including, Army Commendation Medal; Army Service Ribbon; Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal; Bronze Star Medal; Combat Infantryman Badge; Drill Sergeant Identification Badge; Good Conduct Medal; NCO Professional Development Ribbon; Overseas Service Ribbon; Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal; Vietnam Service Medal; and Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry. He proudly served as one of the longest-tenured Drill Sergeants in the United States Army, holding this critical leadership post for nearly eight consecutive years. In that role, he helped shape the character, discipline, and courage of thousands of young soldiers, many of whom credit him with laying the foundation for their success both on and off the battlefield. His commanding presence, compassion for people, and dedication to excellence left an unforgettable impression on all who trained under his guidance. He served in South Korea, Fort Knox, KY, Vietnam, Fort Polk, LA, Germany, and retired at Ft. Hood, TX. He went on to earn an associate’s degree from Central Texas College and continued to work in the Civil Service for 15 years.

Charles married the love of his life, Mattie Renee Adams, on July 15, 1967, in Jeffersonville, IN. Together they had 3 children and raised them in the admonition of the Lord. He confessed and accepted Jesus Christ as his personal Savior in 1985. Charles and his wife, Mattie, joined the Christian House of Prayer in 1987. He faithfully served along with his wife in the Prison and Jail Ministry for over 20 years, they later joined the Reach Out and Touch Ministry until just a few months before his heavenly promotion. He also graduated from Sonship School of the Firstborn in 2015 and became an ordained minister in 2016.

Charles leaves behind a legacy of love and faith in God that will continue to inspire his loved ones. Admired for his work ethic and faithfulness, Charles was known for his love for the Lord and his “baby”, his joy to live for God, and his passion for preaching the word. He had a boldness and a presence that made people want to listen, and once he had their attention, he made it his life’s mission to tell them about Jesus. The scripture he quoted the most and what he told everyone to remember was Psalms 31:14-15, “I trust in you, Lord. You are my God, and my future is in your hands.” CAV (Charles Adams Version).

Charles was preceded in death by his grandmother, Mary Jackson, parents, Charles E. Adams and Mary Lee Walker; his spiritual mother, Belzora Boykin; his daughter, Bridgette Adams; his sister, Wilma Lyons; his sister, Beverly Merriwether; and his brother, William Gibson.

He is survived by his wife, Mattie R. Adams of Nolanville, TX, his son, Charles A. (Letty) Adams of Killeen, TX; his daughter, Charlette R. Adams and spouse of South Africa, brother, Steve (Cynthia) Gibson of Louisville, KY, his sister; Mona Robertson of Louisville, KY; Dr. Tom Mego, countless spiritual children, and a host of family members. He is also survived by his 3 grandchildren, Adrian Adams, Marcelo Adams, and Yadi Adams, whom he lovingly referred to as Avery, Doc, and Lady who will forever cherish the memories they shared with him. His spirit will continue to live on in the hearts of those who knew him.
