Ralph Anderson was a man of uncompromising integrity, intensely private, generous, kind.

Paraphrasing a source that I cannot now recall, I believe Ralph would have been comfortable in a world of honorable, courteous, well-behaved, well mannered, well educated, cultured, mutually respecting and tolerant people who work productively and honestly. Unfortunately such a world was not available to him, and that saddened and angered him.

I became acquainted with Ralph at the University of Missouri in 1966 – I, an Instructor in my mid-twenties with wife and kids, and Ralph, a seasoned Associate Professor of German. It became clear to me early on that Ralph was a man of aplomb with strong moral convictions and principled values such as fairness and reliability – values reminiscent of an America he often talked about and loved.
