Curnow Funeral Home & Cremation Service Obituary

Robert Thomas Madden Sr. our beloved husband, father, grandfather (papa), great grandfather, and big brother passed away on October 24th 2018 at the age of 83.

Robert was born in Mineral WA to Willie and Geneva Madden on June 30th 1935. He was the oldest of 6 children. After graduating from Eatonville High School Robert joined the Air Force and served for 4 years as a corpsman.  After returning home he moved to Tacoma with his brother Don.  There he attended Knapp Business College and met his future wife Linda.  They were married during a beautiful outdoor ceremony at the bride’s parents, Emil and Alma Lang’s, home in Tacoma on June 30th 1961.  In 1962 they welcomed their daughter Tara Lynne and then three years later in 1965 they welcomed their son Robert Thomas Jr. They raised their children in the Tacoma suburb of Midland.  Once the children graduated from school Robert and Linda moved to Steilacoom where they lived for almost 30 years. Last year Robert and Linda moved to Puyallup to be closer to family. Over the years Robert tried many different jobs: logging, corpsman, taxi driver, ambulance driver, finance, and banking before settling into a long career as a drywall taper.  He retired from Panorama Drywall where he had worked for over 10 years doing their drywall patching and repairs. Robert loved many things in life, people and food being at the top of the list.  He loved to talk with neighbors, friends, family and well just about anyone. He also loved doing things for people and with people. It was not uncommon for him to be fixing something around the house or working on a car for someone.  He especially loved working on countless projects with his sons Robert Jr and Jeff Backes.  He taught us the value and mindset of “Let’s try, what do we have to lose”.  His philosophy was if in the end we could not fix it then we will call someone – we rarely ever had to call anyone. After he retired one of his favorite things was to spend the summer months at his second home in Mineral, which he had purchased from his grandparents, working on projects and tending to his garden.

Robert was proceeded in death by his parents and two brothers David and Daniel. He is survived by his wife Linda, daughter Tara Backes, son Robert Jr, along with daughter-n-law Anna Madden and Jeffrey Backes, grandchildren:  Erik (Lisa) Backes, Drew Madden, David (Courtney) Backes, Brendan Madden, and Megan Valin, great grandson Bennett Knox, siblings: Don Madden, Margret (Dale) Bartholomew, and Elaine Harrison as well as many nieces and nephews.

A celebration of life will be held on November 10th  from 1pm to 3pm at the ALLMENDINGER CENTER located on the WSU Puyallup Research and Extension Center Campus (2606 West Pioneer Puyallup WA 98371). Please join us for this open house style celebration.  Share your favorite memories and join the family for a light lunch in honor of Robert Sr.

In lieu of flowers the family would like to suggest that you consider making a donation in Robert’s name to Adult Day Health, a 501c3 non-profit, located at 6442 South Yakima Ave, Tacoma WA 98408-4599. This center is dedicated to caring for those with Alzheimer’s and Dementia.  They truly are a light in the darkness of this disease.
