Selvarine (Barnes) Jones 61, was born January 26, 1960 in Decatur, IL to Willie James Barnes, Jr. and Roberta L. Pinn Barnes. The family left Decatur, IL and moved to Springfield, IL in 1963.

She was preceded in death by both parents and youngest brother, Jay McClanahan.

Selvarine, also known as ‘Selvar’ growing up, attended Iles Elementary, Washington Middle School, Springfield Southeast High school in Springfield, IL, and later in life, attended Lincoln Christian University in Lincoln, IL where she received her A.A. in Biblical Studies, graduating Magna Cum Laude.

She began working as a teenager, and one of her first jobs was working for the famous Top Big Boy restaurant as a server. After a series of jobs in retail, she began a career with the City of Springfield in 1985, for the Office of Budget Management, then was promoted to Administrative Assistant for the City of Springfield’s Recreation Department. After 18 years with the City of Springfield, she became employed with the Springfield Park District as an Administrative Assistant and a member of the Senior Olympics Advisory Board. Other employment included Lewis Memorial Christian Village as Wellness Center Director, Inn at 835 as Assistant Bookkeeper and Springfield Urban League as Site Coordinator for 21st Century Youth Programming.

Selvarine has worked in the Springfield community for many years, serving on Multiple boards, such as the Springfield Area Arts Council, IL Senior Olympic Games, Mommy’s Safe Haven and Community Arts Center(in which she was also a co-owner and operator with her twin sister).As an avid volunteer, she faithfully served with the Family Service Center’s Compass for Kids after-school meal and tutoring program, and was a certified volunteer for the Salvation Army, as well as, Grant Writer for Pure Haven Family Resource Center. From 1987-1995, Selvar hosted and produced a local talk show on Access 4 channel. She co-directed and participated in four (4) of the State of IL CMS test videos. In 1988 to present, she began partnering with various theatres, sororities, and churches-writing, directing and performing in plays-in which she has received numerous Appreciation & Service awards from sororities and other organizations.

She was an active member of St. John AME Church for more than 20 years where she served in many capacities, including church secretary, missionary society, choir, and Sunday school department.

Selvarine is survived by her three children (of two marriages): Danyalle A. Dixson of Springfield,IL; Jillian A. (Charles) Rice of Albany, NY; Jeraldon A. Jones of Springfield,IL; Five siblings: (twin)Elmada Meek and Odett Barnes of Springfield,IL; Niktha Barnes of Indianapolis, Indiana, Willie James Barnes III of Ohio, and Kyle(Kesha) Mclanahan of Springfield,IL, Half siblings; Vickie Welcome, Dawn Barnes, Keena Barnes and Willie James Barnes IV. She leaves behind 14 grandchildren that were dear to her heart: Shedrick Jackson, Stephan, Olivia and Samuel Dixson; Josaphine and Jaydon Jones, Chloe Gettings, Jeraldon Jr., Jersee, Jaxx and Julian Jones; Deshawn and Nia Jones, and Nala Rice. She also leaves to cherish a host of wonderful nieces, nephews, cousins and special friends.

Deeply felt condolences to the family at large. Selvarine was indeed a beacon of light and love in our community. Having worked with Selvarine at Springfield Urban league & spent time with her during our Journey Conferences, gave me the opportunity to know her and see her kind and generous heart. She was always ready to help and give of her multiple talents to bless others. I know she must be dancing in heaven.
