Charlie, as we knew him, was an inspiration. He was part of a coffee group at McDonald's that has now lost most of its founding members. I visited him at Highland and told the superintendent of schools about one of his recent birthdays, perhaps his 92nd or 93rd, and heard that the superintendent had honored Charlie with a cake, hand-delivered. It was a small honor, but one that showed just a little of the respect that he had earned. He will be missed.
