Sidney M. Johnson, 83, died peacefully at his home in Netarts on Sunday evening, May 28, 2017. Sid was born on January 3, 1934 to Marvin and Nettie Johnson in Wichita Falls, Texas. He had three sisters and relocated with his parents and youngest sister, Bertha, to California in 1951 when he was a junior in high school. He attended the Culter Academy in Los Angeles and was the captain of the varsity basketball team. He had fond memories of working as a lifeguard on the beach during his summers in Southern California. In 1952, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and was honorably discharged in 1953. In 1977, he married Susie Matsumoto, while working as an engineer at Teledyne Ryan in San Diego. They have one daughter, Tiffany (Johnson) Roberts, and as a family moved to Tillamook in 1988. Sid worked at a local consulting firm and ultimately retired from Intel in 2002. Sid also had four children from a previous marriage, Lori, Dean, Daniel, and Darryl Johnson. He is survived by three of his children, Dean, Darryl, and Tiffany, along with nine grandchildren, many great grandchildren, and his best four-legged friend, Odif. Some of Sid's happiest memories of his community included playing Santa, being a Master Gardener, and his time spent volunteering with the Commission on Children and Families. Throughout his life he enjoyed the outdoors and loved to share his many stories; from Cub Scouting with his son Darryl, taking in the Florida sunshine with his son Dean, backpacking through Yosemite, fishing off the Baja Peninsula and Rogue River, and rafting the North Umpqua and Lower Klamath rivers with his daughter, Tiffany. His love for the beach also never diminished, as he enjoyed walking to Oceanside in his younger days, chasing after that perfect cup of coffee. Most importantly, he felt that his most meaningful accomplishment in his life was his marriage to Susie. A memorial service will be held Saturday, July 1, at 1 p.m. at Waud's Funeral Home. A reception is to follow at the OSU Extension Office, 4506 3rd Street in Tillamook. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Netarts Fire Department.
