Stephen Allen Dever

 May 25, 1951-May 23, 2020

We are sad to announce the passing of Stephen Allen Dever.

Steve was born May 25, 1951 in Colchester, VT, the second child of Gerald Marion Dever and Isabel Ann Dever.

Steve grew up in Barre, VT and upon graduation from Spaulding High School in 1969 moved to Stowe.  During his youth, Steve skied for the Mount Mansfield Ski Club and had many fond memories of that experience and made life-long friends with his teammates.  Having skied as a child, becoming a ski patrolman and a ski instructor was a natural progression. As a Stowe ski instructor, Steve made friends from around the world teaching skiing with kindness and a quick wit.  He was an expert skier and instructor for over 40 years.

Steve also worked for many of the inns and restaurants around Stowe, including the Trapp Family Lodge, the Green Mountain Inn, and Stowehoff in the 1970’s.  Steve was also a partner at the Flying Tomato Restaurant on the Mountain Road where his love of cooking began. His grandchildren remembered his “bacon day” whenever they came to visit.

In 1990, Steve started Lamoille Modular Homes, and was a general contractor for over 100 modular homes in Lamoille County. An outdoorsman, he enjoyed biking, hiking, fishing and skiing. His favorite walks included Cottonbrook, Pinnacle, Wiesner Woods, Brownsville and Mt. Mansfield.

Steve leaves his wife of 21 years Deb Dever and her children Kristina Anderson and Jonathan Purcell; his daughter Maya Manion and grandchildren Van, Keely and Gavin; his son Shane Dever and wife Sarah; his mother; 2 sisters, a brother; and 2 nieces.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Stephen’s memory may be made to The Mount Mansfield Ski Club or the charity of your choice.

A private service of immediate family was held on Saturday, May 30th.

Faith Funeral Home is assisting with arrangements. Online condolences may be made by visiting faithfh.net.

Not sure what to say?

Im so sad to learn of Steves passing. The last time I saw him before the mountain closed in March we had a good laugh. I alway laughed with Steve. If he wasnt telling a joke he was talking about family or telling me the astrological every Ski instructor he knew, and there were many. He will be missed. He was a great ski instructor. To Steves family, I am so sorry for your loss.

I was truly saddened to hear about Steve. He was my buddy at the Ski School. Always loved his jokes and openness when we talked. I trust his spirit will be with me on the slopes and when I am teaching multiple beginners who can't walk and chew gum at the same time.

Sorry to hear of the loss of Steve. Thoughts and prayers are with Steves family. He was a friend from high school.

Steve and I became good friends the summer before we started highschool we rode horses and spent time together on the farm in east montpelier I have very fond memories of those day and often think of times we had raising cane, May he rest in peace

I fondly remember working with Steve at the Flying Tomato when I was a college student. I send my thoughts and prayers to his family.

We love you dad
