Gorgen-McGinley & Ayers Funeral Home Obituary

Barneveld – Thomas B. Hodgson, age 86, of Barneveld, passed away on Saturday, October 15, 2016 at Upland Hills Nursing & Rehab Center. Tom was born on November 21, 1929 in Redfield, South Dakota to Benjamin and Marguerite Hodgson. In 1936, his family moved to the Arena area, where he graduated from Arena High School and was a proud member of the football team, who were Tri-County League Champions in 1945 and 1946. On September 29, 1951, he married Geraldine Sweeney and made their home in rural Barneveld. Tom loved the farm life and in 1963, he was named Wisconsin's Outstanding Young Farmer and was a member of the National Holstein Association for 40 years. In the early 70's, he became the Barneveld rural mail carrier. He was very active in the community, having served on the Barneveld School Board, Iowa County Board of Adjustment, Iowa County Farmers Home Committee, Barneveld Immaculate Conception parish council, treasurer for the Town of Brigham, member of the Knights of Columbus, Barneveld Advancement, and St. Bernadette Parish. When he wasn't on the farm or serving his community, he thoroughly enjoyed attending Barneveld athletic events, especially watching his grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Geraldine on June 6, 1982, his parents, and his sister, Joanne Sheehan. Tom is survived by his two sons, Mark (Bonnie) and Jerry (Jackie) all of Barneveld; his five grandchildren, Heidi (Tim) Kovac of Waunakee, William (Amy) Hodgson of Ridgeway, Inger (Dustin) Alfred of Ridgeway, Chad (Erika) Hodgson of Fitchburg, Megan (Josh) Wilson of Lancaster; eight great grandchildren; his sister, Phoebe Jane Walter of Madison; his brother, Dave (Barb) Hodgson of New Glarus; other relatives and friends. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, October 20, 2016 at ST. BRIDGET'S CATHOLIC CHURCH in Ridgeway. Father Steven Petrica will officiate. Inurnment will be held in St. Bridget's Cemetery. Friends may call from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday at the GORGEN-McGINLEY & AYERS FUNERAL HOME in Dodgeville. The family would like to thank the staff at Upland Hills Nursing & Rehab Center for their loving care of Tom over the last 4 months.

Not sure what to say?

I received a call about Tom's passing. So sorry to hear this. I am a distant cousin...Ben was my grandmother Hodgson Arneson's 1st cousin, but Ben was closer to my dad's age and they were very good friends. We grew up with the Hodgsons until they moved to WI. Tom was in my husbands class when they lived in SD. Last time I saw Tom was when we were at the Arneson reunion in 2005. He brought strawberries to our motel. I will let the few relatives here know of his passing. My sympathy to all the...
