Thomas J. Smarth

Thomas J. Smarth, 72, of Manahawkin, died Monday, January 17, 2011, at Arden Hill Hospital in Goshen, New York. Born in North Bergen, Mr. Smarth lived in Union City, then lived in Highland Lakes for 28 years before moving to Manahawkin five years ago. He was a United States Navy veteran and was a member of the Manahawkin V.F.W. A trailer driver for United Parcel Service in Secaucus, Mr. Smarth retired in 1993 with 31 years of service. The son of the late Eugene and Margaret Killeen Smarth, Mr. Smarth was also predeceased by three brothers and four sisters. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Doris Garibaldi Smarth; three children, Thomas Smarth and his partner, Scott, of Middletown, New York, Timothy L. Smarth and his wife, Colleen, of Fredon Township, and Kimberly A. Smarth-Meichsner and her husband, Robert, of Vernon; five grandchildren, Robbie, Ronan, Erica, Aidan and Christopher; and two sisters, Dolores Becker of Jersey City and Patricia Pinelli of Saddle Brook. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 8:30 a.m. on Thursday at St. Joseph's R.C. Church in Newton. Interment will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery in Toms River. Visitation will be held Wednesday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Smith-McCracken Funeral Home, 63 High Street, Newton.
