Thomas Spivak Obituary

Thomas Spivak Sr.

Virginia Beach - Thomas J. Spivak, Sr. "Tom" a devout Catholic and a proud and loving husband, father, grandfather, and brother continued his journey to our Lord on April 15 2014. After a hard fought battle with lung cancer at the young age of 73 he leaves behind his loving wife of 53 years Charlotte "Charlie", three children; Bethany Morris, husband Michael Morris, Christina Roy-Jacobson, husband Dennis Jacobson, and Thomas J. Spivak, Jr. "T.J.", five adoring grandchildren Joshua, Sydney, Madison, Kelsey, and Dillon, along with his faithful companion Phez the dog. His sister Barbara Hayes and her husband Bob who reside in OK, his brother Richard and wife Diane Spivak who reside in Va. Beach, his sister-in-law Joyce Spivak who resides in Queens, NY. Along with a host of nieces and nephews who brought endless joy to his life. He was blessed to have had a circle of close friends for the last 40 plus years that he considered family.

He had a special place in his heart for those less fortunate and dedicated his life to serving others. He served on many volunteer boards which evolved through his involvement with the Knights of Columbus and his church St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church. Tom was a founding member of the board of directors for Marian Manor and Our Lady of Perpetual Help where he served as President. He was chairman of the building committee for St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church. Tom was able to utilize his talents by engaging in many civic organizations in Va. Beach and Emporia, Va. where he shared in varying ways his love and compassion for others. His accomplishments are too many to list, his golf game not being one. While outgoing he was stoic when it came to his own pain and problems. His welcoming personality and sense of humor left the door open for others to share their burdens with him. WELL DONE GOOD AND FAITHFUL SERVANT. The viewing will be on Monday April 21 from 6 to 9 p.m. at Woodlawn Funeral Home with service at 7 p.m. Mass at St Gregory the Great Catholic Church on Tuesday April 22nd at 11 a.m. reception to follow at Marian Manor. Donations can be made to Guide Dogs of America or Guiding Eyes for the Blind.

I have just learned of the passing of Mr. Spivak. Mr. Spivak was my baseball coach at NAS Little League when I was in the Senior Division. His knowledge of the game and dedication to all of us on the team was truly an asset during the time he was our coach. Please accept my sincerest condolences to the entire Spivak family during this time of sadness.

To the Spivak family, I am deeply sorry for your loss. Tom was one of our favorite customers at Dominion Bank back in the day. He always had time to share a story and laughs, even when he broke his jaw playing softball. He would take delight in sharing his blended concocted recipes. He will be missed.

Rest in Peace, Uncle Tommy.

You were a hero to me in my boyhood. I will never forget the fun we had with Charlie and you, running around Virginia Beach in your fastback mustang when Kevin and I visited for the summer. And so many other great memories.

Warm thoughts for Aunt Charlotte, Bethany, Christie and TJ.

Tom was a golfing companion of mine for the past 6 plus years in the Virginia Beach Seniors Golf Club. There was no man more affable, friendly and pleasant than Tom. Our group is diminished by his death.

I am saddened at his death and offer my deepest condolence to his family and friends.

"Requiescat in pace" my friend, you will be missed wherever you made your presence known.
