Let Us Pause to Honor the Memory of
Mr. Vachel H. Craig

Mr. Vachel H. Craig, age 86, of Bennington, Indiana, formerly of Quercus Grove, Indiana, entered this life on January 23, 1924 in Warsaw, Kentucky. He was the son of the late Floyd & Mary Louise McDannel Craig. He resided in Kentucky moving to Switzerland County in the Eighth Grade. He was a 1942 graduate of Patriot High School in Patriot, Indiana. Vachel was united in marriage on March 4, 1944 to Ruth Jean Kinman. To this happy union arrived seven sons to bless their home. Vachel was inducted into the United States Army on August 9, 1944 in Indianapolis, Indiana. He rose to the rank of private serving Company A 410th Infantry 103rd Division during World War II. He was honorably discharged after fighting in the Rhineland and Central Europe Campaigns & Battles on January 21, 1946 from Camp Atterbury, Indiana, receiving the EAME Theater Ribbon with two Bronze Stars, the Good Conduct Medal and the World War II Victory Medal. He retired after 45 years in heavy construction. He was a 45 year member of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Jointers serving in Local 1031 in Louisville, Kentucky. He had worked in heavy construction with Robinson & Sons Excavating, J.A. Rubel Construction, and Jim Lucas Excavating. He worked part time as a mail carrier for the Patriot Post Office. He was a farmer all of his life and enjoyed yard work, gardening, camping, hunting, fishing and being with his family. Vachel and Ruth enjoyed fifty four years of marriage together until her death on Sept. 18, 1998. Vachel was a member of the Patriot Baptist Church for many years and had served as the Sunday School Superintendent. For the past several years he had been a member of the New Liberty Baptist Church and enjoyed the fellowship there. After the death of his beloved Ruth, Vachel had enjoyed his companionship with Nadine Hankinson. Vachel was a faithful member of the East View Cemetery Board, the Patriot Alumni Association and was always willing to give a helping hand where it was needed. Vachel died Monday, June 21, 2010 at 10:10am at Kindred Hospital in Louisville Kentucky.

Vachel will be lovingly remembered by his seven sons & daughters-in-law: Randy Craig & wife: Chris of Quercus Grove, Indiana, Kerry Craig & wife: Marilyn of Quercus Grove, Indiana, Gordon Craig & wife: Nancee of Vevay, Indiana, David Craig & wife: Lisa of Quercus Grove, Indiana, Eddy Craig & wife: Bernita of Quercus Grove, Indiana, Mark Craig of Quercus Grove, Indiana, Kevin Craig & wife: Nancy of Mt. Sterling, Indiana; his companion: Nadine Hankinson of Bennington, Indiana; his 19 grandchildren: Lisa, Brian, Stacey, Adam, Matt, Thor, Megan, Laura, Rachel, Amanda, Bobbie, Allen, Steven, Lori Jo, Jason, Jamie, Jena, Cathryn & Sara; his14 great grandchildren: Bailey, Carly, Gavin, Brennan, Sydney, Logan, Lily, Dalton, Wyatt, Brooke, Amber, Camden, Corbin & Ava; his loving sisters: Eva Minger of Elrod, Indiana, Janet Bond of Patriot, Indiana, Lorraine Raisor of Wapakoneta, Ohio; several nieces, nephews & other relatives. He was preceded in death by his parents: Floyd & Mary Louise McDannel Craig; his wife: Ruth Jean Kinman Craig died: Sept. 18, 1998.

FUNERAL CEREMONY

Funeral services will be conducted Friday, June 25, 2010 at 11:00 a.m., by Pastor Mike Sawalich at Haskell & Morrison Funeral Home, 208 Ferry Street in Vevay, Indiana. Interment will follow in the East View Cemetery in Patriot, Indiana, with full military honors conducted by Vevay American Legion Post 185 & VFW Post 5396.

VISITATION

Friends may call Thursday, June 24, 2010 from 5:00 - 8: 00 p.m. and Friday from 9:00 a.m. until time of the service at the Haskell & Morrison Funeral Home, 208 Ferry Street in Vevay, Indiana.

MEMORIAL EXPRESSIONS

Memorial contributions may be made to New Liberty Baptist Church or the East View Cemetery Association. Cards are available at the funeral home.

So sorry to hear of Vachel passing, I know you all will miss Him greatly. I considered Him and all of the Craig family good friends and neighbors. I remember lots of laughs in the Coal Yard at Ghent. God bless all of you.
