VAUGHAN ELMO CALDER

CALDER, Vaughan Elmo Jr., 90, of Richmond, went to be with his Lord on May 17, 2013. He was the widower of Mary T. Calder. He is survived by his loving children, Van Calder and his wife, Mimi, Tracy Calder and Debbie, Corey Calder and his wife, Debbie, Donald Calder and his wife, Wanda, Cara Calder Bitzer and her husband, Scott; his 10 beloved grandchildren, Lauren, Erin, Trae, Marcus, Katie, Tyler, Taylor, Mary Beth, Christopher and Shawn; his two beloved great-grandchildren, Hayes and Lila; and his loving brother, Donald W. Calder of Virginia Beach, Va. He is also survived by his faithful Westie, "Skye." Vaughan was a member of the Boy Scouts and earned the rank of Eagle Scout. He graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School, Class of 1940, with honors. He graduated from Virginia Polytechnic Institute in 1944 with a B.S. Degree in Metallurgical Engineering, and was a member of Phi Delta Theta, the Cotillion Club and the Honor Court. Mr. Calder served his country during World War II in France as captain in the U.S. Army, 100th Infantry Division. He proudly led his men in battle and was awarded the Combat Infantry Badge, The Bronze Star with 2 Oak Leaf Clusters, the Purple Heart and the Presidential Unit Citation. After the war, Vaughan married the love of his life, Mary Trawick, and moved to Pittsburgh to start his professional career with U.S. Steel. They returned to Richmond when he became manager of manufacturing for Richmond Engineering Co. He would later join Steel Services, Inc., where he retired as vice president of sales and marketing. After retirement, he began a second career of 16 years with Walmart stores as manager of claims. He served as president for both the Virginia Society for Engineers and the Engineers Club of Richmond. He belonged to St. Matthew's Episcopal Church, the West Richmond Kiwanis Club, Richmond Country Club, Tuckahoe Little League and was a 60-year member of Richmond Lodge No. 10 A.F. & A.M. Vaughan could always be heard whistling a happy tune and went out of his way to help people. He was a talented artist who enjoyed traveling, golf and supporting his five children in every dream they pursued. Vaughan was an avid bowler through his 89th birthday, earning a 300 Game Award (score + handicap) on January 20, 2012 in his Friday Night Bowling league. Vaughan and Mary were happy giving to others and they cherished the time spent with their grandchildren, who affectionately called them "Pop Pops" and "Mia." They took special pride in supporting their beloved Virginia Tech Hokies and Redskins. Vaughan lived every day to the fullest and is now reunited with loved ones in Heaven. A memorial service for Vaughan will be held on Friday, May 31, at 11 a.m. at St. Matthew's Episcopal Church, 1101 Forest Ave. Memorial gifts may be made to the St. Matthew's Episcopal Church Endowment Fund, 1101 Forest Ave., Richmond, Va. 23229.
