VERONICA APRIL CORTEZ Lake Station, Indiana April 14, 1973 Nov. 2, 2007 Veronica April Cortez, age 34, passed away Friday, November 2, 2007. Veronica was raised in Lake Station and graduated from River Forest High School in 1991. She was a 2006 Indiana University Northwest graduate with a B.S. in Finance. She was currently completing her masters degree. Veronica was a wonderful mother and loved spending time with her children and hanging out with family and friends. She loved family cookouts. She loved spending time in the kitchen, cooking for others. She was always meeting the need of the hour for others. She also enjoyed taking trips on the Harley to bike rallies where she also enjoyed the camping. Veronica organized many poker runs for people she felt needed help. She was an avid Steelers Fan. No matter what she always made sure she got the last word. She is survived by her mother, Jeannie Tarin and step-father, Rich Tarin of Portage, IN; also survived by her father, Mike Cortez and step-mother, Virginia Cortez of Lake Station, IN; 1 daughter, Andriana Cortez-Funes, and 1 son, Nicholas Funes of Hobart, IN; 1 sister, Dina Cortez (Drake Coby) of Lake Station, IN; 2 brothers, Ruben (Tina) Cortez of Tarentum, PA; Michael Cortez (Jessica Upson) of Tyler, TX; partner, Dwayne Belt and sons, Griffin and Drake Belt, of Hobart, IN; nieces, Michaelene, Breyonna, Sydnee, Mackenzie, nephews, Devon, and Karsen, grandparents, Jesus and Juanita Rodriguez of East Chicago, IN; many cousins and uncles, best friends, Amy H., Amy G., Tami, Amanda, Lizzy, Lisa, Bridget, Angela, Rachel and many other friends. She was preceded in death by her father, Reynaldo "Guero" Cortez, maternal grandmother, Juanita Carmona, paternal grandparents, Miguel and Consuelo Cortez and Nephew, Ethan Zayne Kalberer. In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial donations to the family so they can set up a scholarship fund for Veronica's children. Funeral Services are Tuesday, November 6, 2007 at 1 p.m. at Rees Funeral Home, 600 West Old Ridge Road, Hobart. Burial will follow at Ridgelawn cemetery.
