He was born in Champaign, Ill., in 1919, to William E. Fitzgerald and Verna Alta (Runyan) Fitzgerald.
He was married to Frances Fitzgerald, now deceased, and to Patricia (MacInnis) Fitzgerald.
He served for 20 years in the U.S. Navy, retiring as chief petty officer signalman. During his tour of duty, he was a survivor of the attack on Pearl Harbor and served on several ships including the USS San Francisco and the USS Oriskany. After his naval career, he worked a number of years at Electric Boat and then moved to Florida.
He is survived by his wife, Patricia, a nephew, and eight stepchildren, Kathleen Kichline, Theresa Schimmel, Jean Walters, Ellen Greer, Donald MacInnis, Beth Schultz, Laurie Hartnett, and Rita Luce.
The funeral procession will assemble at 10:30 a.m. on Monday at the Fulton-Theroux Funeral Home, 181 Ocean Ave., New London and will proceed to an 11:30 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial in Our Lady of Perpetual Church, 63 Old Norwich Road, Quaker Hill. Burial with military honors will follow in St. Mary Cemetery, New London.
