Willard A. Black, of Spartanburg, died Monday, October 8, 2007, at Spartanburg Hospital for Restorative Care. Born August 10, 1917, in Jonesville, SC, he was the son of the late Willis Larry and Minnie Woodruff Black. He was the husband of Martha Spearman Black of Taylors and was first married to the late Jewell Weaver Black for 50 years. He was a retired rail inspector with Southern Railway. He was a charter member of St. James United Methodist Church and instrumental in founding the church. Mr. Black was an avid fisherman, golfer, and talented musician. Surviving in addition to his wife is a daughter, Jeri B. Staggs and her husband Danny F. of Spartanburg; a grandson, David W. Staggs and his wife Amy G. of Spartanburg; a granddaughter, Laurie S. Oakley and her husband Harold of Mechanicsville, VA, and two great-grandsons, R. Cody Waters and R. Cetchum Waters, all of Mechanicsville, VA; two step-sons, Gene Spearman and his wife Janet, and Gary Spearman and his wife Diane, a step-daughter, Becky Bridwell and her husband Mitchell, a step-granddaughter, Gena Craig, and three step-grandsons, Derrick Spearman, Brian Spearman, and Tony Bridwell, all of Greenville County. Visitation will be 6-8:00 p.m. Wednesday, October 10, 2007, at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel. Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, October 11, 2007, at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Mobile Meals Service, P. O. Box 461, Spartanburg, SC 29304; or to the Spartanburg Humane Society, 150 Dexter Road, Spartanburg, SC 29303.
