I met Bill in the swimming pool at the Society Hill Sheraton. We were a motley bunch; men and women of various ages and careers. Heck, there was even a Monseigneur who swam with us every morning between 5:00am and 7:00am. But we all shared the love of swimming and glorious feeling of slicing through the water. I met Bill in 1985, when I first attended worship at Arch Street Meetinghouse; he was clerk of the Monthly Meeting at that time, and a beacon of kindness and Quaker Light to this seeker. His patience, humor and geniality added so much to the life of the Meeting and to the lives of his friends. I count myself blessed to be among them. A thoroughly good and decent human being, he will be missed.
