I will always remember the patience and humbleness of Professor Massey in the course I took from him as an undergraduate -- his style was quite unlike the other professors I had both as an undergraduate and as a Ph.D. student. I went to his office hours once as a senior -- he was in Dunham - and when I got to his office, there he was, the man who had written the book for many of us on topology, at a battered old metal desk in a room I recall as badly in need of better lighting. Last Saturday when I was introducing my daughter to New Haven for she will be taking up a postdoctoral fellowship at Yale in the Fall, I noticed on the Mathematics Department website the passing of Professor Massey after a long life well lived.
