William M. "Goose" South, 75, of the Burton Community near Booneville, Mississippi, died Friday, August 29, 2003, at the Magnolia Regional Health Center in Corinth, MS. Mr. South was born in Prentiss County, MS on June 6, 1928. He moved several times, having lived in Portland, OR for 20 years, Decatur, AL for 10 years, Tupelo, MS for 12 years, and retiring in 1990 to his farm in Burton, MS, which is known as the "Big Goose Ranch". While employed at Blue Line Transport in Portland, OR, he earned a certificate for driving one million miles without an accident. He later drove for B & B Concrete and worked on the construction of the Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway with Peter Kiewitt. He was a Christian, and loved the outdoors. He enjoyed traveling and had visited Fiji, Mexico, Hawaii, New Zealand, and many other places. He will be remembered as a loving husband, father, and friend. Visitation is scheduled for 4:00 - 8:00 pm, Sunday, August 31 at Cutshall Funeral Home in Glen, MS. Funeral services are scheduled for 10:00 am, Monday, September 1, officiated by Bro. David Krech and Bro. William H. Burcham. Interment will follow at Forked Oak Cemetery. Pallbearers will include Hoyt Strickland, J. E. Wheelington, Phillip South, Tommy South, James Tennyson, and Robert Mann. Honorary Pallbearers will include Jennifer S. Dempster, Larry Bryant, James Shaw, Aaron Carter, and Dwight Brown. Cutshall Funeral Home of Glen, MS is entrusted with arrangements. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Virginia Felker South, of Burton, MS; one son, Phillip M. South and his wife Karen, of Vancouver, WA; one daughter, Jennifer South Dempster and her husband, Martin, of Hamilton, New Zealand; two brothers, Armon South and his wife, Vern, of Burton, MS and Orville South and his wife, Teresa, of Kirkville, MS; one sister, Peggy South Mann and her husband, Robert, of Booneville, MS; 2 grandchildren, Matthew Phillip South and Samuel Phillip South, both of Vancouver, WA; 2 nephews, 6 nieces; special friends, Jerri Kelly of Tupelo, MS, and her grandson, Kelly Lang of Gravette, AR; an "Angel In Presence," Dr. Leonard Pratt and family, of Corinth, MS; and numerous friends all across the country. He was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas Luther and Ruth Moss South; and 2 brothers, Justis South and James Bendell South.
