Peter Highland Obituary

Peter John Highland
Naples, FL

On July 1, 2013, Peter John Highland began his eternal rest in the presence of his loving Heavenly Father.

Peter was born to Peter and Julia Bumbuc on July 30th, 1931 in Philadelphia, PA. He lived his childhood in Watsentown (Camden), NJ, where he assisted his father in his cabinet business, honing many skills which would later be refined and put to significant use in his vocations. He graduated from Camden Regional High School in 1950, where he enjoyed playing football. He then enrolled at Purdue University, and after one year, joined the United States Air Force. He served as a Radar Technician, after having been rejected as a candidate for flight school, because of poor eyesight. He served a total of four years, two of which were in Kyoto, Japan.

He returned to Purdue and continued his education, but felt a calling to the field of teaching, and completed his education at Ball State University, graduating with Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Industrial Arts.

On August 24th, 1963 Peter was married to Marilyn Hays of Muncie, IN. They were blessed with two beautiful daughters, Kristen Lynn Highland, born July 16th, 1966, followed by Elizabeth Ann Highland De Los Santos (Jose Antonio) on February 7th, 1969.

Peter was predeceased by his parents; a brother, Paul; a sister, Cornelia; a dear baby grandson, (whom he never met); and a special sister-in-law, Joanne Noller.

Peter is survived by his wife, Marilyn; and two daughters.

He was a teacher at Kellogg Community College, Battle Creek, MI and worked as a product designer with various companies in Michigan, Ohio, and Indiana. He delighted in building things for his daughters and his special project was to build a harpsichord for Marilyn. He loved fishing and golfing, and, as a retirement project, started a business, building and repairing golf clubs.

He was a wonderful gardener, keeping a beautiful lawn, growing many flowers, specializing in roses and tuberous begonias.

Peter loved music, and often sang in the church choirs where Marilyn served as organist. His faith was important, and he taught Sunday School, being especially interested in Bible prophecy. He and Marilyn were among the founding members of the Voices of Naples, and for a time all three family member participated together.

A service of celebration will be held Thursday, July 25 at 11:00 a.m., at Covenant Church of Naples, 6926 Trail Blvd.

Memorial gifts may be sent to the church or to Voices of Naples in care of Mrs. Mariellen Lemasters, 2249 Clipper Way, Naples, FL 34104.

My thoughts and prayers are with your family. Although I never met your Dad, I know he must have been something special as he raised a beautiful and kind daughter in you, Kristen. I hope you find comfort and peace in the days ahead. I will be thinking of you.
