Nancy Hamlin Tomlin
Nancy Hamlin Tomlin, 88, formerly of Wilton, CT, passed away peacefully on December 30, 2020 after a courageous struggle with Alzheimer's Disease, then COVID-19. Nancy was born on August 19, 1932, to Lawrence and Sarah Hamlin in Chicago, IL. The early years of her life were spent in Saigon, Vietnam, where her father worked for Standard Vacuum Oil Company (Mobil). The family later settled in Greenwich, CT.
Nancy attended Bates College and graduated from Bucknell University in 1953 with a B.A. in English. After college, she received a secretarial degree from the Katherine Gibbs School in New York City and worked as an executive secretary for CBS Broadcasting.
Nancy is predeceased by her loving husband of 52 years, Dr. Donald Gear Tomlin, and her younger brother, Robert Hamlin. Upon her marriage in 1956, she and Don lived in Norfolk, VA, where he was stationed as a naval officer. They later relocated to Philadelphia, where Don would earn his dental and orthodontic degrees at the University of Pennsylvania. Their daughter Susan Elizabeth was born in 1959 and son Stephen Lawrence followed in 1961.
Nancy and Don raised their children in Wilton and owned businesses in neighboring New Canaan. Nancy owned and ran New Canaan Travel for two decades and Don practiced as the town's orthodontist. The Tomlins were avid world travelers and also enjoyed spending time at their vacation home in Brownsville, VT.
In the mid-1990's, Nancy and Don retired to East Orleans in Cape Cod, where they spent many happy years within a close-knit community. Extroverted and social, Nancy enjoyed cooking, entertaining, and reaching out to those in need. She and Don were blessed with the company of many lifelong friends.
Nancy was never happier than when spending time with family. "Grammy" was especially devoted to her five grandchildren, and she enjoyed close relationships with all.
After Don's passing in 2009, Nancy moved to La Jolla, CA to reside closer to her son and daughter-in-law. She is survived by her children Susan Kinney of Wellesley, MA and Stephen Tomlin and wife Patricia of San Diego, CA. She will be dearly remembered by grandchildren James, Ian, and Eleanor Kinney, and Duncan and Faith Tomlin. She also leaves her beloved sister-in-law, Carol Hamlin of Jupiter, FL, niece Molly Hamlin Cope, and nephews Richard and John Hamlin.
Nancy's generosity, boundless energy, and creative endeavors brought joy to friends and family. Over the past few years, as her illness progressed, we were deeply touched by all who reached out. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations in Nancy's memory be made to the Alzheimer's Foundation of America (https://alzfdn.org
) or Nazareth House (https://www.sistersofnazareth.com
). A celebration of Nancy's life will be held in summer 2021 at a location, date and time to be announced.
