Dean Cougill Rohrer, Attorney and Sailor, former Pound Ridge resident, 75
Dean was a beloved father of three, grandfather of five, brother, sailor, former Eagle Scout and influential attorney who passed away on November 5th after a valiant battle with three degenerative diseases. Dean recently had been living in New Jersey to be near his daughter and grandchildren after living in Pound Ridge for more than 40 years. Dean was known for being intelligent, strong, and persistent, and he survived three years after his wife and noted artist, Christina Marie Rohrer's passing.
Dean was born in Indiana in 1940 and worked hard to be at the top of his classes, was a strong leader and excelled at football and rugby through high school in Bronxville, NY and college but always found time to enjoy his family, the outdoors and the ocean. Dean graduated from Union College in 1962 and the University of Virginia Law School in 1966.
Dean distinguished himself as an attorney, at Pillsbury Winthrop and Simpson Thacher. He came up through the ranks with former Mayor Giuliani as an Assistant United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York, prosecuting notable drug and heroin importation cases. Dean retired after serving as Vice President and Assistant General Counsel at General Telephone and Electric (GTE), the country's second largest telephone system at the time, in Stamford, CT.
Dean was an avid sailor, racer and excellent navigator in the days long before GPS. He sailed over 30,000 miles, racing all over the world at the highest levels of competition, including the Admiral's Cup. He was a member of the Storm Trysail Club and was always cool under pressure during many white knuckle moments far from the safety of shore, or any potential rescue. His greatest recent sailing adventure was around the tip of South America at Cape Horn.
Dean inspired hope and helped improve many lives as a leader, friend, sponsor and example of a life well lived.
Visitation will be held on Friday, November 20th at Posten's Funeral Home in Atlantic Highlands, NJ from 5-8pm and a funeral liturgy will be offered at St. Agnes R.C. Church in Atlantic Highlands, NJ at 10am on Saturday, Nov. 21st.
