Robert E. Doerr, 86, of South Walnut Street died the morning of Monday, March 3, 2008, in Jameson Hospital.He was born Sept. 21, 1921, in New Castle, a son of the late Charles and Anna Pettitt Doerr.He was married to Frances C. Stefano Doerr. She died Dec. 23, 2006.Mr. Doerr was a member of United Steelworkers Local 1330 and had worked at U.S. Steel in the hot furnace, retiring after 35 years. After he retired, Mr. Doerr worked part time at Barber’s Nursery in New Castle.An Army veteran of World War II, he served in Europe with Recon Co., 771st Tank Destroyer Battalion, under Gen. George S. Patton. For his service, Mr. Doerr was awarded the Europe-Africa-Middle East Campaign Medal with four bronze stars, Good Conduct Medal, American Theater Service Medal and World War II Victory Medal.He was a member of VFW Post 315 and was recognized in November as the second-oldest living member of the post.Survivors include a sister and brother-in-law, Donna and Harold Capitola of Salem, S.C.; two sisters-in-law, Betty Rozzi and Marie Stefano, both of New Castle; and a number of nieces and nephews.In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by his brother, Richard Doerr; and two sisters, Helen Torsello and Louise Hoover.Visitation is 6 to 9 p.m. today at the William F. and Roger M. DeCarbo Funeral Home, 926 Cunningham Ave. A service will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. tomorrow at the William F. DeCarbo Memorial Chapel of the funeral home. The Rev. Dennis Bupp will officiate. Burial will be in St. Vitus Cemetery. All though I've been out of town 32 years,visits were only every few years ,but yet have all good memories of my Uncle Bob.I would like to thank the Rozzi family for all the years of loving care they extended.We will take rest in knowing he is with the Lord.
