Don Gates Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Jul. 30 to Jul. 24, 2025.
Don McNeill Gates, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and brother, passed away on July 22, 2025, at the Baptist Memorial Hospital in Union County, New Albany, Mississippi. Born on November 6, 1948, in Union County, MS, Don was a man of steadfast courage and kindness, whose legacy is etched in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.

Don was a proud U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam War, where his valor was recognized by the numerous commendations he received, including three Purple Hearts, two Bronze Stars, two Oak Leaf Clusters, and the distinguished Combat Infantry Badge. These honors reflected his unwavering dedication and bravery-a commitment he later transitioned to a lifelong career with the Mississippi Department of Transportation until his retirement. His colleagues there remembered him not only for his work ethic but also for the camaraderie and leadership he brought to any project.

At home, he was the pillar of the family, lovingly supported by his wife, Barbara Parker Gates. Together, they cultivated a life rich in love and joy with their children, Stacy Sanford and Don N. Gates (Tiffany); and their four grandchildren, Justin Sanford, Dylan Gates, Jacob Sanford, and Parker Gates. His sister Fredia Porter (John) remembers him as both a confidant and a lifelong friend. Though his parents, John Thomas Gates and Lois Irene Simmons Gates, as well as his siblings, Bobby June Ross, Erma Graham, James H. Gates, and Larry Gates, predeceased him, the values they instilled in him lived on through his gentle and friendly presence.

Moral values guided Don throughout his life, providing him with strength and solace. His hobbies reflected a man at peace with the world, whether he was out fishing and hunting, or tending to his beloved cattle, and more recently his goats and chickens. Above all, the time spent with his children and grandchildren was what he cherished the most, leaving behind countless treasured memories.

Don's gentle, friendly way will continue to inspire his family and friends. His life was a testament to the power of kindness and the difference one person can make through small, daily acts of love and loyalty. He will be profoundly missed by all who loved him.

A visitation will be on Thursday, July 24, 2025 at United Funeral Service from 10:00 a.m. until funeral service time at 11:00 a.m. Bro. John Parker will officiate. The American Legion will conduct military honors. Burial will be at Bethel Baptist Church Cemetery.

United Funeral Service is honored to be entrusted with these arrangements.
