Chris Allen Stapleton
HEBRON: A memorial service for Chris Allen Stapleton, age 62, of Hebron, will be held at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 16, at Criss-Schoedinger Funeral Home with Pastor Jenn Ballenger officiating. Military honors will be observed by the Licking County Veterans Alliance.
Chris passed away on Friday, April 12, 2013 at his home. He was born December 14, 1950 in Newark, Ohio to the late Thurman and Adrian (Wilson) Stapleton.
Chris was a disabled veteran who served in the United States Army for five years, stationed at Fort Bliss in El Paso, Texas. He served two tours in Vietnam where he became a highly decorated soldier for his exploits that included the rescue and saving of the lives of fellow soldiers.
Chris grew up and resided in Heath, where he worked at the Newark Air Force Base, and later moved to the Buckeye Lake and Hebron area where he spent the remainder of his life. During that time he worked at Michael's Industry in Newark and tended bar at the Tavern in Buckeye Lake. He had also worked for the Caine Corporation in Hebron.
Chris loved music and often performed for people in bands, at church and other social gatherings. He was locally renowned for his beautiful voice and gained minor celebrity status singing karaoke at local taverns where people would gather just to hear him sing. His signature song was "God Bless the USA".
Chris loved sports and was a devoted Buckeye and Browns fan and worked for a period of time as an usher for OSU football games. He loved to watch wrestling and as a young man loved to ride his motorcycle.
"Charismatic" best describes Chris and he had a sense of humor and an upbeat personality that made him a crowd pleaser and attracted a lot of friends. He always tried to make sure the people around him were laughing and having a good time. The world was Chris's stage and he loved to perform on it. Even as his health declined, Chris found the strength to have time for family and friends and do what he could to bring a smile to their faces.
Chris had four children of his own, sons with his first love, Jamie, Rex, Brian and Jason, and daughter with Bev, Misty, with whom he lived and relied on as his primary caregiver, friend and companion. Chris had 14 grandchildren, Dalton, Stephen, Bodhi, Donald "Bubby" Christian, Zane, Xander and Cody "Codeman", Tiffany "Sis", Isabelle, Sasha, Piper, Emily and Garrett; and a great-granddaughter, Baily. Chris had an unwavering devotion and great love for his siblings, his brother, Paul "Butch" (Barbara), and sisters, Carol, Beverly and Debbie (Sam). He had a special lifelong friendship with his former wife and partner, Karen; he also had a continued friendship with former wife, Janet. Chris also had many special relationships with his brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law. Chris spent many years with his love and partner, Bev, and remained close friends until her passing. As an uncle and great-uncle, Chris was loved by numerous nieces and nephews whom he cherished, especially his niece, Nky, who held a special place in his heart, and nephew, Doug, with whom he shared many adventures in his younger years. Chris formed many friendships in life and some grew through love into family bonds like the one between him and his extended family, Tim and Tina White and their children.
In addition to his parents, Chris was preceded in death by two brothers, Sonny and Jim, and sisters, Nancy Hayes and Martha Salyer; and a grandson, Rex.
Friends may call one hour prior to the service on Tuesday at the funeral home, 179 Granville Street, Newark.
