Russell Irmscher Obituary

Russell J. Irmscher

HEATH: Funeral services for Russell J. Irmscher, 66, of Heath, will be held at the REED-EGAN FUNERAL HOME, 141 Green Wave Drive, Newark, 10:30 A.M., Wednesday, October 17, 2012 with Pastor Dave Mason celebrating. Interment will follow in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery with military honors provided by the Licking County Veterans Alliance.

Russell died in his home surrounded by his loving family and Hospice nurse on Friday, October 12, after a courageous 16 month battle with acute myeloid leukemia. With the help and guidance of his family a macrobiotic diet was used during those months. He was born in Lacrosse, Wisconsin on July 28, 1946 to Helen (Kominar) Irmscher-Thoma, of Heath, and the late Roy Irmscher.

Russell was a 1964 graduate of Newark Catholic High School and attended Notre Dame College while studying for brotherhood at Holy Cross Seminary. In 1967 he joined the US Navy and pursued an electrical career while serving on the US Shangri La, aircraft carrier, during the Viet Nam War. After his military service, Russell continued his career goals as a journeyman electrician at DCSC, Columbus and the Newark Air Force Base, Heath, followed by Boeing International. He completed a forty-year electrical career before retirement in 2008.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by his loving wife of forty years, Carolyn (DeVito) Irmscher, whom he married August 19, 1972; his talented daughter, Krista Smith, exceptional son-in-law Kevin, and delightful grandchild, Kaleb, who calls him "Pops." Other survivors include his sisters Maureen Kominar and Myra Sapp, as well as, brothers Ronald and Mark Irmscher.

Russell will be remembered for his easy-going, fun loving spirit and the way he cared about people. He would often be found volunteering at the Davis-Shai House, being a member of the Katzenjammer Kids historical group, or supporting his family and friends. It didn't matter who you were, it seemed that Russell was always able to make time to listen, offer a helping hand and a smile. He also enjoyed gardening, euchre, history, cookouts, electrical projects, and being a loyal fan of the Ohio State and Notre Dame football teams. He was a gentle and kind giant to all and will be sadly missed.

Family and friends may call at the funeral home from 2-4 and 6-8 P.M., Tuesday, October 16, 2012 where a brief prayer service will be held at 7:30 PM.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the Foundation for Hospice of Central Ohio, PO Box 430, Newark, Oh 43058; or the Davis-Shai House, 301 Central Parkway, Heath, Oh 43056.

Carolyn, I have thought many times of what a precious gift you gave to our class in all that you did to make our reunion such a fine life experience after 50 years of being apart. That you were able to engage all of us as you did in a time when your husband was so ill is an extension of immense generosity and grace. We are deeply sorry for the too-early passing of your husband. We send love and blessings, Marybeth and Jerry

Dear Carolyn,

I am so deeply sorry for your family's sad loss. Despite what you have been going through with Russ's illness, you still managed to put together such a great reunion for our class and plan every detail to perfection. I had no idea what you were going through personally while doing all of this for your classmates. What a remarkable woman you obviously are. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

My heart is filled with sadness. I will never forget the fun day I spent with Carolyn and Russ at a TOPS picnic. Russ so proudly wore his "COW" costume and Carolyn was the fine "Farmer". He spread so much joy and laughter that day. Thank you for the memory. Love you. Rosemary
