NEWARK: A funeral service for Mary Mildred (Stroud) Gooden, age 90, of Newark will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, June 19 ,at the Newark Chapel of Henderson-Van Atta-Stickle Funeral and Cremation Service with Rev. James Gau officiating. Burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery with the Licking County Veteran Alliance will provide military honors.

Mary passed away Sunday, June 16, 2013 at Kindred Transitional Care and Rehabilitation Center. She was born November 19, 1922 in Guernsey County, Ohio to the late Charles A. and Lillian Marie Blanche (Miller) Stroud.

Mary served in the United States Navy, stationed in San Francisco where she worked in the office that posted orders for the troops. She attended Hunter College in New York and had lived in the Newark area for over 70 years. She worked at several local businesses: Dr. Burton, John J. Carroll Department store, Kaiser Aluminum, Larson Manufacturing and retired as bookkeeper from Montgomery Lumber. She was of Methodist faith and mostly recently attended Neal Avenue United Methodist Church. She enjoyed assisting her elderly friends and anyone needing assistance. She enjoyed traveling with her sister, Vera, and close friend, Norma Harris of California.

She is survived by two sons, David Lawrence Gooden and Rodger (Deborah) Gooden both of Newark a daughter, Janet (Garold) Thompson of Tennessee; six grandchildren, Joshua David Gooden of Cleveland, Daniel Alan Gooden of Columbus, Jacob Charles Gooden of Newark, Katheryn Koss of Nashville, Tennessee, Tawnya (Tim) Severt of Utica and Tascha (Mark) Clark of Dresden; four great-grandchildren; a sister, Vera I. Stroud of Newark; a sister-in-law, Roberta Hill (Charles) Stroud of South Carolina; five nieces and nephews; numerous great nieces and nephews; and a close friend, Norma Harris of California.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, David S. Oatman Griffiths and Charles A. Stroud, Jr.; a sister, Emlen (Red) Oatman Hannum; and a nephew, Terry Ray Stroud.

Friends may call (today) Tuesday, June 18, from 4-7 p.m. p.m. at the funeral home, 59 North Fifth Street, Newark.

Memorial contributions may be made in memory of Mary to The New Beginnings Shelter (The Woodlands) or the Licking County Aging Program.
