Betsy White Fountain Ward died on August 25, 2018 following an extended illness at her home at the age of 89.
She was born in Fountain, North Carolina November 5, 1928, the daughter of Robert Allen Fountain, Jr. and Mary Bagley Overton Fountain. In 1945, she received her high school diploma from the preparatory department of Peace Junior College. She attended Duke University for two years before graduating from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1949 with a BS degree in commerce. In 1949, she married William Farrior Ward, Jr, her loving husband of almost 60 years.
A devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, her life was centered around her family and her friends. From childhood she was a lover of music and books, traits she inherited from her mother and father. She did her best to instill in her children, grandchildren, and even great-grandchildren those loves. History and preservation were two other special interests she especially enjoyed while serving for 15 years as a museum guide at Tryon Palace. She was truly a fine genuine southern lady!
A lifelong Presbyterian, she became a member of the First Presbyterian Church in New Bern in 1952. She was a member of the sanctuary choir for 25 years and an active member of the Presbyterian Women. She was a devout Christian.
She was predeceased by her devoted husband, William F. Ward, Jr., and by her brother, Robert Allen Fountain, III of North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Survivors include her daughter, Betsy W. Burkart-Hagan of Centreville, Virginia; a son, William F. (Bill) Ward, III of New Bern; three granddaughters, Virginia B. Barron and husband Rich of Fairfax, Virginia; Muryel W. Vary and husband Sean of Bunn Level, North Carolina; and Caslyn W. DeLuise and husband Chris of New Bern. She is also survived by one grandson, Alex W. Burkart and wife Becky of Ashburn, Virginia. She also has five great grandchildren of whom she was very proud: William Burkart, Carrie Burkart, Christopher Barron, Connor Barron and Cohen DeLuise.
