George Costas Georgallis died Monday night, May 10, 2010. He was born on November 6, 1932, in New York City to Costas and Christina Georgallis. His parents emigrated from Cyprus and lived first in New York City and then in Norfolk, Virginia. George graduated with honors from Maury High School in Norfolk in 1950 and with honors from Virginia Polytechnic Institute in 1955. In 1955, he began a long engineering career with IBM. He married his beloved wife Kathe-rine Papadakis Georgallis in 1958; she predeceased him in 1992.

George is survived by his son, Mark S. Georgallis and his wife, Cynthia, of Richmond, Virginia; his daughter, Stephanie Georgallis Proctor and her husband, Knox Proctor, of New Bern, North Carolina; three granddaughters, Martha Georgallis, Katherine Proctor and Gray Proctor; his very special friend, Joan O. Schmitt of Raleigh, North Carolina; two brothers, Peter C. Georgallis of Herndon, Virginia, and John C. Georgallis of Grandy, North Carolina; and three nieces, Sharon Georgallis Moffit of Leesburg, Virginia, Angela Georgallis Smith of Herndon, Virginia and Maria Papadakis of Mount Solon, Virginia.

In retirement, George particularly enjoyed the activities of, and the company of his many friends in the Raleigh International Folk Dancers, and he doted on his three granddaughters.

A memorial service will be held at the Brown-Wynne Funeral Home on Saint Mary's Street in Raleigh on Friday, May 14, at 1:30 p.m. After the service, his family will receive friends at the Irregardless Café at 901 West Morgan St. in Raleigh.

Those wishing to do so should make memorials to the Katherine Papadakis Georgallis Memorial Scholarship Fund at Meredith College in Raleigh, or to the charity of their choice.
