William Earl (Bill) Gaskins, died at his home Friday, Oct. 5, 2018.
He was born in New Bern, NC on Aug. 16, 1943.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Mack Prescott Gaskins and Sarah Cornelia Gaskins and his sister, Esther Rae Gaskins Bautsch.
In 1960, he joined the United States Navy and served for four years on the Destroyer Robert K. Huntington as a Gunner's Mate. In 1964, he married Laurene Risley in Atlanta, GA, and then moved to Southern California 2 years later. He attended El Camino College in Los Angeles, CA. and graduated in 1968. In 1970, they returned to his beloved hometown of New Bern. He began his Civil Service career at Cherry Point Marine Corps Air Station in 1973 as an air conditioning and heating mechanic and retired as the MCAS Facilities Maintenance Manager in 1998. His second "career" was as the weekend Dock Master at Bridgepoint Marina. He dearly loved his family, sailing, and boating and spent many happy hours fishing with his sons and friends. He was "adopted" by several feral cats in the past few years and enjoyed caring for them.
He is survived by his wife, Laurene, son, Wade Gaskins his wife Lisa and his grandchildren Patrick and Samantha, son, Andrew Gaskins his fiancé, Valerie and grandchildren Emerson, Hayden and Carson, nephew, Brian Bautsch his wife Susan and children Briar and Emilie, nephew, Michael Risley his wife Lily and children Eric and Hannah.
A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 9, 2018 at 3:00 pm at Cotten Funeral Home with visitation one hour prior to the service, from 2:00 to 3:00 pm. A private burial in the Gaskins Family Cemetery will follow.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks to please make a donation to anyone in our area that has lost so much from Hurricane Florence.
