Margaret Mayfield Obituary

Margaret Mayfield Margaret Mayfield, known to her family and friends as Peggy, died on Friday, September 12, 2014, in Thousand Oaks, California. She was 91 years old. Born Margaret Masterson in 1923 in Chicago, Illinois, to Philip and Lorenza Masterson, she was the middle child of three. In 1933 when she was 10, her family moved to Long Beach, California, just in time for the 1933 Long Beach earthquake. The house they were living in was severely damaged in the quake, so they moved to Glendale where she remained until college. She attended Immaculate Heart College and graduated in three years in 1944 with a degree in Chemistry. After graduation, she got a job in China Lake, California, working at the Naval Ordinance Test Station, where she met her future husband, Earle Mayfield. They were married in January 1952. For several years, Peggy and Earle lived in Salt Lake City while Earle attended graduate school. There she gave birth to her first two children: Robert and Mary. After Earle finished his graduate course work, they moved back to the China Lake area for several years, and Peggy gave birth to her next three children: Stephen, Philip, and Paul. In 1959, they moved to Torrance, California, where they bought their first house. Shortly after this, Peggy gave birth to her two youngest, Richard and Ann. Peggy and Earle stayed in the Torrance house for over twenty years, raising their seven children. Throughout the 1960's and 70's, Peggy volunteered her time with several organizations in the south bay area: the South Bay Fair Housing Office, the League of Women Voters, and the Catholic Workers. In 1985, after Earle retired, they moved to Los Osos, California, on the central coast. During their retirement years, they often travelled, including trips to Africa, Europe, Alaska, Mexico, etc. Earle died in 2007, and Peggy moved to Thousand Oaks a few years later to live with her oldest daughter, Mary. She is survived by six of her children, her son Paul having died in 2011; 14 grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. Robert (Margaret Ambrosavage) and his two step-children, Elizabeth and Alex; Mary (Tim Coles) and her three kids, Monica, Andrew, and Alayne; Stephen (Peggy McCallum) and his two children, Michael and Chris; Philip (Jeanne Costello) and his two step-children, Shane and Jarrett; Richard and his son Max, his step-daughter Kiersten and her daughter Emma; and Ann (Robin Martinez) and her three kids, Arielle, Cameron, and Isabelle. A rosary will be held at 6:00 p.m. on Friday, October 10th, at Mission San Luis Obispo. A funeral mass will take place at Mission San Luis on Saturday, October 11th, at 2:00. There will also be a gravesite service after the mass at Los Osos Valley Memorial Park in Los Osos, Calif.. To us she was Grandma Peggy, she was loved by us all. May she rest in peace with Grandpa Earle, she will be missed by so many. Our condolences to the entire Mayfield family. Our fondest memories of her were her Easter time visits. She will live in our hearts forever.

To the entire Mayfield family,
The Linehan's mourn the loss of your mother. Mrs. Mayfield provided me great guidance, as she was my best friends Mom. She provided all of the Michelle Drive Gang (MDG)incredible insight to view points that we may not have been exposed to elsewhere. The Mayfield home was a home filled with great love, a deep family bond, in-depth intellect, and an incredible technical library (National Geographic, several encyclopedia's, the largest dictionary I have every seen in my life, several scientific journals subscriptions, and the Christian Science Monitor). I will consider your mother perhaps one of the most influential mentors in my journey to Cal Poly SLO in the late 70's. The entire Linehan family shares the loss of your mom and we send you our love and prayers.

Oh, how Aunt Peg will be missed. My fondest memory of late was the Mayfield family stopping at my place in Oregon on their way to visit cousin, Paul in Washington. Peggy never changed. She was always taking care of everyone. She had a backpack slung over the back of her wheelchair filled with Earle's medicine and anything else she needed. Never let things get her down. She was a wonderful mother, the best aunt and friend to all of us. Can't think of a childhood memory without Peggy being a big part of it. We were blessed to have Peg in our lives for so long

God Bless you Peggy

Peggy volunteered for the Long Term Care Ombudsman program when I was the coordinator. Peggy was professional, intelligent, caring and such a lovely person. I admire her greatly and appreciate all her efforts in behalf of the nursing home residents. What a wonderful, full life she lived. She made the world a better place.
