Thomas Howard Hacha Obituary
Thomas Howard Hacha, honorable son of Stanley and Grace Hacha, age 88, died peacefully in his home in Ashtabula, Ohio on Friday, February 9, 2018. He was born December 13, 1929 in Ashtabula, Ohio. Tom was a charming, warm and patient man who intrigued everyone who entered his orbit and shared a drink with him.
After graduating from Harbor High School in 1948, Tom served in the US Army during the Korean War from 1948 – 1951 and was awarded the Purple Heart. In 1957 he graduated from The Ohio State University with a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering. Tom's 40-year engineering career specialized in pioneering fuel cell technology, heat transfer and battery technology including 10 patents and 5 published papers.
Tom's career concluded at NASA Lewis overseeing the Photovoltaic Power Module Thermal Control System (TCS) which provided electricity for the entire International Space Station. After retiring from NASA in 1994, Tom and his wife Janet returned to Ashtabula where they remained active contributors to various social and humanitarian movements.
Tom is survived by his daughters, Joanne N. Fisher (Robert) of Midlothian, VA and Jennifer G. Richards (Kim) of Silver Spring, MD; grandchildren, Carlie Fournier (Drew), Ryan, Aaron and Alexander Fisher (Ashton), Thomas and Michael Richards; and great grandson, Jaime Fournier.
Tom was preceded in death by the love of his life, Janet Scott Hacha, his wife of 63 years; his sons, Jeff and Tommy Hacha; and grandson, Ben Hacha.
