I had the great honor of knowing one of the greatest Americans, Frederick F. Neubauer. I was lucky enough to have Fritz allow me to be part of his life after the War. There was nothing better for a young boy to go fishing and trappings with Fritz Neubauer. Everyday during the summer's months I was with Frtz and the labs. I came from a Fly Fishing and Hunting family but it was Fritz that taught me the basics and the understanding of nature. Fritz knowledge of the outdoor was and is second to none and watching and learning from him help me become the sportsman that I'm today. Fritz was also a wonderful father as well from my perspective. Fritz treated me as one of his own kids for which I was very grateful. I'm still trying to have my wife to allow me to have the 6 – 10 labs. Fritz not only helped me become the man I'm today but I know he helped other to become great outdoors man as well women .
God bless Frederick F. Neubauer and may he rest in peace.

At ten I met Fritz. I was close to him until 18. I learned to cast a fly between 10 o'clock and two o'clock as if the sky was a clock. I learned to love animals like birds, bluegills, especially dogs, as they love you and can work with you, mostly on the field. I learned to have Hunt Club members go in smaller and smaller circles by use of a dead fox. He made my Dad and me closer, as they both had a rough time in the Pacific. He taught me to be myself, more Huck than Tom. He arranged my first date in a truck with an areator for fish:that's how funny he was. He was one of my three fathers. I will miss him: the Ranger, genius, and gift to many men, women, and children. Let's set up a Friends of Fritz Neubauer for his love of nature.

Fritz was a blast! I'll never forget watching him debate Cleveland Amory, making me rip out the guts of a dead duck, putting my hand in a bloody venison garbage can, going thru Gates Mills parade on top of his truck with all of us and the dogs, and how he never called me by my first name!!! He had an amazing spirit and made you realize not to sweat the small stuff. It was great to spend so much time at your house, and have some very fun & interesting times! I am so glad you had such a great dad and grandfather to keep everyone entertained as well as loved. Lots of love always, Patti Rindfleisch Bourne

Some of my fondest and earliest memories I have in life start with Fritz Neubauer. My Father, Gary Donaldson would wake my Brother and I up 2 hours before sunrise where Breakfast would be waiting for us and a vehicle already warmed up to go to the "Game Farm". I couldnt have been any older than 7 or 8 and we would follow our Father and Fritz around with BB guns pretending we were hunters. The rush of opening day at shooting time was always my favorite moment out of the day. Eventhough my brother and I were never able to drop a Duck or Goose with the BB guns it was amazing watching the dogs work with such precision. He was one of the Best of the "Greastest" generation to ever live.
On a sidenote he tossed my mother down a hill on her wedding day! I know she was livid at the time but its one of those memories that she will cherish for the rest of her life.

Grew up at Fritz's and had some of the most formative experiences of my life there. Fritz was a huge influence in my life and in the lives of a lot of other kids who learned to trap, hunt, fish and camp with him. He was a force of nature. --John Mueller

Fritz was always a part of my life. He was a dear friend to my family. He grew up with my father, Bob Linich. He taught us how to love our friends, family and animals. I hold so many memories of Dad and Fritz hunting. Loose animals in the attic - hanging skins to dry. Fritz always had a great smile and words of wisdom about life. Dad will be so glad to see him. With my deepest sympathy,

First and foremost- the world will never be the same in the loss of such a great man!
I was honored to spend soo much time with Fritz in and out of the woods. My first buck that will always hang on the wall remains a fond memory of Fritz. (as he had it mounted for me) There will never be another like him and I am truely humbled to have learned the beauty & value of the natural word from a legend of the woods!
To the Neubauer Family your are in my Heart and Prayers in this difficult time. Till our paths cross again!

Fritz was my stepfather who introduced me to the working retriever, which became a life-long passion. I am honored that he held in high regard dogs such as Honey Bear II and Ranger, examples of my breeding program who both, with devotion, worked tireless hours retrieving crippled game for their Master.
Fritz taught each of us to love and respect our sporting dogs that transcended the occasional duck dog. They were your loyal marsh partners, your second set of eyes and your resource to carry out a commitment to recover all game. They made us proud.
Fritz, thank you. I will have faith that we will meet again and that you will be with your beloved retrievers: Steady, Hans, Honey Bear I, Mother (a male), Wolfgang, Dumkopf, Woodsie, Scar Face, Dickens, That, This, Honey Bear II and the inimitable Ranger. May we all see that sight someday.
With Sincere Love--

Fritzell had a real gusto for life. I can still picture him with a beer in one hand, a smile on his face, a jeep full of his dogs and on his way to or from a new hunting adventure. May your new life be as full and exciting as your last one. Taps my friend.

Fritz was a friend of my Dad,Bob Marek, back in the 50's and, by association, Fritz became my hero. As a girl of about 10 I was priviledged to hop in the jeep with Firtz and Yippee and go out and check traps. He greatly influenced my love and understanding of the outdoors that remains today. After we harvested the bounty we would go to the cabin in the woods where Fritz would proceed to skin the beaver, mink, etc and stretch the skins over boards to dry--I can picture it so clearly to this day. The sights and smells were so unique. Fritz was a man among men and, as I remember, always himself. I am so sorry for the loss of a great man.

So many stories:
Ageing tracks
Ducks @ White City
Mink on the streetcar
Well shot bucks
Snow Lake John
Testing the Land Rover
Coon trappers vs. coon hunters
Cleveland Amory
And so many more (some even true)
I owe Fritz a debt of gratitude I can't begin to repay. Thank you and I wish you peace.

The stories I have heard of this man called Fritz!!! My Dad, John Simpson was a long time friend and even after hunting was no longer an option, Dad would jump in his truck and go and visit Fritz at least once a week. Our sincere sympathy for the family. Dad will be happy to see you!

I was lucky to have spent so much time with Fritz as a kid. I grew up hunting and fishing at Fritz's - my first fish on a fly rod was at the second little pond where there were more bluegills per square inch than anywhere on the planet. I was soon spending summers hanging off the front of his Land Rover, shovelling stuff in the kennels, building duck blinds, draining ponds, filling up ponds, netting fish, catching snapping turtles, eating really really bad food, and hanging out in beer joints at the end of the day. My parents assumed I was being introduced to the pureness of nature...
For a snotty city kid going to a private school, Fritz's world was a revelation. Life was raw, real, and a hell of a lot of fun. It is hard to know exactly what I learned, but I am glad I learned it.
I will share two stories. The first was when I got lucky with a shot and killed three ducks with one shot. Fritz celebrated that event for years - it fit right into his way of mythologizing life and making stories better than reality.
The second was when I got tired of waiting for the duck drive to start and started shooting blackbirds for fun. About 100 ducks went the wrong way and nobody else got a shot at anything. I am lucky to still be alive. Again, this became one of the stories that got told over and over.
Even though Fritz could be tough, it was always crystal clear that he loved you. I guess he treated us like young labrador retrievers, and we responded just about the way a lab would - knowing what was expected of us, hoping for approval, but with just enough independence to every now and then do something really stupid and annoying.

Of all the characters I've written about over the past decades, no one could match the incomparable Fritz. He was a solid friend, hunting companion and always amazing grist for the story mill. Over the years, we've solved many of the world's problems over a cold beverage, and had so many rockin' good times.

Fritz was a family friend. A friend to my grandparents, and to my my mother and father. He would always arrive in a van with his dogs, tackle, and buckets all hanging out. He would always tell me not to cover my face with my hair because I had a beautiful face. I finally listened to him when I stopped with my teen agnst. On my mother's wedding day, my mother got mouthy with him and he threw my mother over his shoulder in her wedding dress down a hill. It was not funny then, but it is funny now. My father worked on the game farm with Fritz and looked up to him. My family and I have many fond memories of him and my heart goes out to his family as does my prayers.

My deepest sympathies to my buddy fritz's family. He and I argued back and forth for only 15 short years, but all the stories that he relayed to me, have been told to my two sons who had the pleasure of meeting him last summer, Thank you Fritzell for allowing my sons and I the time and opportunity to do some remembering with my coon trapping buddy. Dearly loved, and sorely missed. Alf Veiterzein my friend. David (Cajun) Stotts [email protected]

Me and my siblings knew Fritz the legend and Fritz the neighbor as we grew up in Geauga County. I cannot recall seeing him without his prized dogs; he loved them dearly. I was blessed to have him in my life again when I discovered him at Holly Hill last year. We had many conversations over the last months about my brothers Danny Alexander, and Donald Thompson, (both preceeded Fritz in death)whom each looked up to Fritz as young men. I will miss those conversations, his sense of humor, and his warm smile. Goodbye sweet prince.

The end of an era. Fritz has joined Juice in the Happy Hunting Grounds. What a reunion that had to be! They don't make them like that anymore! Thoughts and prayers to the family!
