ALFRED HAWKINS Obituary

Alfred E. Hawkins, 92, of Daytona Beach, Florida, passed away at home on July 4, 2011. His wife of over 60 years, Sara Boales Hawkins, predeceased him in 2003. He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Don Hawkins and JoAnne Hawkins, and by his grandson, David Hawkins. Alf was born in Birmingham, Alabama, on July 27, 1918. He was raised in Fort Payne, Alabama, and graduated from Marion Military Institute in 1938. He attended the University of Alabama, where he met his future bride, was a member of Phi Gamma Delta fraternity, received his bachelor's degree in 1940, and received his first law degree in 1943. He served as an infantry officer in the United States Army. He received his second law degree from the University of Florida in 1945 and was admitted to both the Alabama and Florida Bars. Alf was the second of four generations of lawyers, and he practiced in Daytona Beach for more than 50 years until his retirement in 1998. He served as the United States Commissioner for this area, was President of the Volusia County Bar Association, and was the local representative to Attorneys Title Guarantee Fund for many years. Alf was a longtime member of First Presbyterian Church of Daytona Beach, where he served as a Deacon and as an Elder. He enjoyed golf and was formerly a member of Oceanside Country Club. He also liked boating and was a member of Halifax River Yacht Club. He was a skilled carpenter and enjoyed woodworking. But Alf's first priority was always his family. A memorial service will be held at First Presbyterian Church, 620 South Grandview Avenue, Daytona Beach, on Friday, July 8, 2011, at 2:00 p.m., with a reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Thornwell Home for Children, 302 South Broad Street, Clinton, South Carolina 29325.

Dear Don
Allen told me that Alf had passed away on the 4th. I am so very sorry. I have such fond memories of his wonderful smile, warm strength and watching the fire works on the 4th of July from your back yard. I had forgotten that both Alf and my Dad had attended Marion Military at the same time. I was so proud when your Dad offered to give Dad's eulogy. He gave such a wonderful one. "I want a full report!"
Thanking of you today.

Dear Don and Joanne, What a privilege to have known your dad. He always made me smile when I worked at First Presbyterian Church and the short time I got to work at HH&B. His kindness was evident. Please know I send my prayers and a hug to you at this time of loss.

Mr. Hawkins was just a kind and thoughtful man. Over the years, he extended many kindnesses to our family. To me, personally, whenever we spoke, he made me feel so comfortable, as if we were the only two people in the world at that time. That is such a rare gift, and I will miss him very, very much

Mr. "H" was a wonderful man, a great boss and a fantastic attorney. I will miss him coming into the office and asking me "how's Bonnie and how's our Pensacola girl?" I feel blessed to have had Mr. H in my life for the past 22+ years.
