A Funeral Mass for Judge Freddie J. Worthen, 79, a retired County Court Judge and United States Army Lieutenant Colonel, who passed on Saturday, November 9, 2013 at Mayo Clinic, Jacksonville, Florida will be 9 AM, Saturday, November 16, 2013 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, New Smyrna Bch; Funeral Services will follow at 11 AM at Allen Chapel A.M.E. Church, 580 George W. Engram Blvd, Daytona Bch. Interment will follow in Daytona Memorial Park South. Calling hours are from 5 - 8:30 PM, today (Fri., Nov. 15) at RJ Gainous Funeral Home with a Wake Service from 6 - 8 PM. Judge Worthen was born November 7, 1934 in Seville, FL to Charlie and Bessie Worthen both of whom preceded him in death. He graduated from Euclid High School, Deland, FL at the age of 14 and from Florida A & M University at the age of 18, where he received a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology. After 22 years in the US Army, he retired as Lieutenant Colonel. He then studied law at Howard University, receiving his Juris Doctor, thereby launching a new career in the mid 1940's. He worked in private practice, and then as a State Prosecutor in Volusia County. He was appointed to the Judgeship in 1989 by Governor Martinez, where he served from 1989 to 2005. Judge Worthen was a member of V.F.W. Post #3282, and the Navy League. He was a past board member of the Seabreeze Kiwanis, the Knights of Columbus, and the V.F.W. Post #1590. His professional affiliations include: a member of the Florida Bar and the conference of County Court Judges. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Frances Worthen, two daughters: Dawn Worthen-Gross, Daytona Bch, FL and Erika Worthen-Nesbit, Atlanta, GA; three grandchildren: Courtney Davis, Daytona Bch, Tiana Gross, Tallahassee, FL and Brooke Nesbit, Atlanta, GA along with a host of sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces and nephews.
