Harriett Ruth McMillian McClung
Harriett Ruth McMillian McClung, 93, passed away peacefully with her family by her side on September 10, 2018 in Port Orange, Florida. Harriett is the daughter of the late Frances Rebecca Griffith and the late Clontz M. McMillian. After the death of her father, her mother was remarried to the late Hugh Edgar Taylor. Harriett's brother Hugh Edgar Taylor, Jr. resides in McRae, Georgia. Harriett's husband, William (Bill) Alvin McClung and son John William McClung, preceded her in death. Daughter, Rebecca Lou McClung resides in Waterbury, Vermont and daughter Nancy Louisa McClung Suah and husband Dr. Michael James Suah reside in Ormond Beach, Florida. Harriett has three grandchildren: Dr. Stephen David Suah, wife, Dr. Kayla Suah, Rebecca Michelle Suah Elam, husband, Matthew Avery Elam, Sean Christopher Kesler, wife, Laura Kesler, and two great-grandchildren, Ameilia Marley-Rose Elam and Milo William Owen Elam. As a young girl, Harriett lived in McRae, Georgia and later Durham, North Carolina. She loved to travel to visit her grandparents in McRae, Harriett Gregory and John McMillian and Ruth Stell and Henry Griffith, Uncle Charles Griffith and Aunt Louisa Griffith McRae, all of who preceded her in death.
Harriett received an Associate Degree in Business and Bookkeeping from Women's College of North Carolina. She lived in Augusta, Georgia after marrying Bill and then Hogansville, Georgia where they owned Hogansville Drug Company. They moved their family to Decatur, Georgia where Bill continued his work as a pharmacist and Harriett a dedicated mother and homemaker. Harriet was involved in several civic and Methodist Women's Organizations throughout her time in Decatur. Their final move was to Roanoke, Virginia. Harriett continued volunteering and working in the home caring for her children. Harriett was a volunteer with several Mental Health
Service programs and through her work earned the appointment to the Virginia Developmental Disabilities Planning Council by Virginia Governor John N. Dalton. Bill and Harriett were
members of Windsor Hills United Methodist Church, in Roanoke until their deaths. She served on many committees and ministries at the church and her favorite was the After Care Ministry
which serves developmentally disabled adults in Roanoke. Harriet enjoyed playing games, bridge, and dominoes with her family and friends. She was a wonderful Mom and loved dearly by her family. The funeral for Harriett Ruth McMillian McClung will be held Saturday, September 29, 2018 in Georgia. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to After Care Ministry c/o
