Funeral Services for Mrs. Helen Reed, 89, Port Orange, who passed on October 2, 2018, will be 11 AM, Tuesday, October 9, 2018 at RJ Gainous Funeral Home. Calling hours will from 5-8 PM, today (Mon, Oct 8) at RJ Gainous Funeral Home and from 9:30 AM until service time at the Funeral Home on Tuesday. Mrs. Reed was born December 7, 1928 during the Harlem renaissance in New York to Blanche Wiggins and Arthur Holder. She attended public school in New York City and in 1948 moved to San Francisco where she met Roswell Reed, who had completed his service in the Army and BS Degree. They married Nov. 4, 1951 in Berkeley, CA. Roz soon took a job with NIH in Bethesda, MD as a chemist. They started their family in Washington DC where they had sons, Philip and Scott. They raised their sons in Glenarden, MD where Helen became a community leader and a "2nd mom" to the kids in the neighborhood. Soon the Mayor took notice & she was hired as head of the Recreation Department & youth counselor. Helen was also a gifted watercolor artist. Her art blossomed after she retired and moved to Port Orange in 1989. She has inspired several noted artists today. She leaves 2 sons Philip (Amy) & Scott Reed of Daytona Bch; six grandchildren: Brian Reed, Monique Reed, Shantel Reed-Rollins, Shawn Reed, Tsitra Hall, Shaniah Gardner; seven great grandchildren: Deon, Anna Alejandra, Charles, Allani, Traye, Tristan, Camille; a brother-in-law Clarence Reed and niece, Margo, both of Oakland, CA and family and friends.
