HERSEY HUFFMAN Obituary

Hersey A. "Herky" Huffman, 73, a beloved husband, father and grandfather, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 4. A memorial service will take place at 4 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 15, at Deltona Alliance Church, 921 Deltona Blvd., Deltona. A retired Realtor and Enterprise resident, he devoted his life to his family and community.  Born April 14, 1937 in West Virginia, the son of Hersey E. and Mona Huffman, he was only six when his family moved to Orlando. He learned to love Florida while hunting and fishing with his father, who passed away Dec. 11 in Orange City. He graduated from Edgewater High School and obtained an Associate's Degree from Orlando Junior College.  He met the love of his life, Diana, in 1965 and married in 1967. They moved to Stone Island that same year, where they raised their two sons, Zachary and Dane.  He was one of the original partners in the development of Stone Island and owned his own real estate business for many years, including a Century 21 franchise. He spent years in service to his community on planning boards and other volunteer boards. He was a long-time member of the Four Towns Rotary and a former chairman of the West Volusia Board of Realtors. He was a founder and first chairman of Pinnacle Bank and was a former chairman of the Allan Broussard Conservancy. He was appointed by Gov. Jeb Bush and served 10 years as a commissioner with the Florida Game and Fresh Water Fish Commission and its predecessor, where he worked to promote and preserve Florida's precious natural resources. He served three years on the governing board of the St. Johns River Water Management District, appointed by Gov. Charlie Crist. He enjoyed spending time outdoors with his sons and beloved grandchildren, Charleigh and Dawson.  He is survived by Diana, Zachary and Dane, Dane's wife Jennie, and their children, Charleigh and Dawson; his sisters, Yvonne "Miss Vonnie" Wilson and Sara Dashiell and their families. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions for youth conservation mentoring can be made to the Herky Huffman Lifetime Achievement Award, Wildlife Foundation of Florida, P.O. Box 11010, Tallahassee, FL 32302.

Not sure what to say?

Herky was a mentor, a teacher, a nurturer. The first time I met him, he arrived in a rush at the animal clinic, raced out of his truck carrying a huge hound dog with a 6 inch fish hook stuck through his muzzle. Herky was in tears and begged us to "save his dog." Herky, Bless His Heart, had more fishhoks stuck in his hat than the one we cut off the pup LOL. He needed the anesthesia. On a more serious note, God took notes from Herky's Dad and his friend Phil Spinney and called Herky to Heaven's Gates to see what they see up there. All my best to the family. M. Kephart

Dear Huffman family sorry for your loss. My father (Skip) told me stories about Herky when I was a kid. What a wonderful legacy he leaves behind. I always loved Uncle Hersy also. They both will be greatly missed.

What an awesome guy Herky was! He wasas one of the few that understood what it was to be a public servant. He served and didn't look to be served. God bless the family...

Dear Huffman family,
I count myself fortunate to be known as one of Herky's friends since high school at Edgewater and then on our occasional consultations over many years concerning the real estate rental and management market. Now as a member of the clergy, I am offering my prayers for the peace and comfort of the family in this time of terrible loss and for the soul of this great man that he may rest in peace in the arms of his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

As one of Herky's first cousins, I have many fond childhood memories his stories of hunting, fishing, and exploring his beloved Florida swamps. As an adult, I admired his passion for preserving the unique environment he loved so much. Herky will be sorely missed by our family and by all who knew him.
