J. Thomas Schillings Obituary

J. Thomas Schillings, age 90, passed away November 29, 2015 in Daytona Beach, Florida, after a brief illness. Tom was born in Washington County, Ohio to the late Ernest and Lulu Schillings on December 20, 1924. He enlisted in the Navy in 1942 and was assigned to the USS Fowler. The USS Fowler was a Destroyer Escort for many large convoys that hunted down German subs and escorted ships with troops and supplies. After his discharge in 1945 as a Gunners Mate 2nd Class, he returned to Ohio and worked until moving to Pa. in 1959. In 1983 he retired as an executive of Tryon Trucking in Bucks County, Pa. He and his wife, Jeanne moved to Holly Hill, Florida in 1983. Tom was active in the Bucks County Chamber of Commerce, the Daytona Beach Men's Golf Assoc., a charter member of VFW Post #1590 and always attended the yearly reunions with his fellow shipmates of the USS Fowler. Tom was a member of and on the Board of Trustees at Union Congregational Church of Holly Hill, Florida. Tom was preceded in death by his loving wife, Jeanne, his sisters, Goldie Baker, Edith Reign, and brother, Wayne Schillings, Sr. He is survived by his sons; Jerry Schillings of Marietta, Ga., Jeff Schillings of Morrisville, Pa, Mark Schillings, Sr. of Levittown, Pa., daughters; Debbie Roloff of North Canton, Ohio and Carol Kulik of Bensalem, Pa. He is also survived by eight grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. A graveside service will be conducted by Rev. Steve Heath on Sunday, December 6, 2015 at Volusia Memorial Park, 550 N. Nova Rd., Ormond Beach, Florida at 1:00 pm. Military honors will be rendered by the United States Navy. Condolences may be shared with the family at www.volusiamemorialfunerals.com
