Walter Robert Materna, 79, of Port Orange entered into eternal rest on January 9, 2019 peacefully in his home in the presence of his family. Born September 10, 1939 in Sault Ste. Marie, MI to the late Walter and Helen Materna, he attended Sault High School for two years, completing his high school education at Michigan Lutheran Seminary. He attended North Western College in Oconomowoc, WI as well as Milwaukee School of Engineering, graduating with a two-year degree. He worked at Bethesda Lutheran Home for two years in Watertown, WI and was a Manufacturing Engineer for McGraw Edison and Cooper Power Systems for 39 years. Residing in Allegany, NY before retiring in 1997 to Port Orange, Walter's hobbies were fishing, boating, golf, and time spent with family and friends. He was a Deacon at St. John's Lutheran Church in Allegany for eight years. In Florida, Walter organized the Trinity Lutheran Church volunteer program at Halifax Urban Ministries soup kitchen and was an avid member of Trinity Lutheran Church in New Smyrna Beach. In 1962, he married Joan Fischer, who survives, and from that union were born four children: Michael A. Materna of South Daytona, the late Josef W. Materna, Wendy A. Rose of New Smyrna Beach, and Cathy M. Materna of Deltona. Walter is also survived by two sisters: Marlene (Bill) Kallio of Sault Ste. Marie, MI and Gretchen Backus of Nelson, British Columbia; 12 grandchildren; 18 great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by son, Josef Walter Materna; grandson, Mathew Chaffee; sister, Gene Usimaki; niece, Naomi Backus; nephew, Danny Backus; and brothers-in-law, Glenn Backus and Mel Usimaki. Funeral services will be held Thursday, January 24th at Trinity Lutheran Church, 485 Turnbull Bay Road, New Smyrna Beach. A gathering/reception for family and friends will begin at 6pm, with a service at 7pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Walter R. Materna to St. Jude's Children Research Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis TN 38105 or online at . Arrangements entrusted to Shannon Maloney Funeral Home, Port Orange; (386) 760-9660.
