Dora "Murlene" Minson Shearholdt
Springfield - Dora "Murlene" Minson Shearholdt, 85, of Springfield, MO, passed away Friday, February 2, 2018 at Glendale Gardens Nursing Home in Springfield after a brief struggle with multiple illnesses and medical complications.
Born November 1, 1932, Murlene was raised by Charlie and Hassie (McKinney) Minson on the family farm just outside of Houston, MO as the oldest of two daughters. A graduate of Houston High School, she married Robert L. "Bob" Shearholdt of Conway, MO on February 10, 1952. Their marriage lasted 40 years until his passing in December of 1992.
Murlene was a skilled homemaker, who was known particularly for her sewing and cooking. Her cooking abilities were particularly evident in the appearance of her well-fed husband and two sons! She also put those talents to good use while serving as a homeroom mother and PTA member during her sons' elementary and junior high school years at H.P. Study School in Springfield - a role she particularly relished. Once both sons reached high school age, she chose to work outside the home as a microfilm machine operator, first at Edco Microfilm Co. in Springfield and later at Springfield City Hall. Her connections with fellow employees at these two institutions led to ongoing friendships that lasted through the years. After her husband's passing, Murlene spent some time traveling on domestic bus trips with a close friend. However, the highlight of their adventures was a trip to Switzerland in May of 1999. As various medical conditions took their toll, she entered Christian Healthcare - East nursing home (now known as Glendale Gardens), where she spent ~ 7 ½ years until her passing. She quickly became a favorite of the facility staff, with her reputation as an avid Bingo queen, her sharp wit and sense of humor, and for her playful harassment of any employee who happened to have the fortune (or misfortune) of catching her attention as they walked by. She also enjoyed cats, bird watching and fishing through the years.
Murlene's parents raised her in the faith of their local Baptist church, and she remained true to church participation over the course of her life. She was a member of Broadway Bible Church, Springfield, MO and also attended worship services and related activities regularly that were offered by her nursing home. Old-time gospel music was featured regularly on her radio and record player throughout the course of her life.
She leaves behind one son, Larry Shearholdt of Kansas City, MO, one granddaughter, Cassandra Shearholdt of Beaverton, OR and one nephew, Tim Hoit (and his wife, Ann) of Owasso, OK, along with several other nieces and nephews. Ex-daughter-in-law Barbara Shearholdt of Kansas City, MO remained as a meaningful and positive part of Murlene's life. In addition to her parents and husband, Murlene was preceded in death by her sister, Gladene Hoit, her eldest son Gary Shearholdt, and daughter-in-law Mary Shearholdt.

I had the privilege to get acquainted with Murlene when she shared a room at the Gardens with my Aunt Opal. She had quite a sense of humor and now I know why she complained about the food so much since she was a great cook. When I saw this obituary I was reminded that we all need to take the time out to spend some time with these special people and hear "their story". Bless you Murlene.
