Gary Mitchell Obituary

Gary Allen Mitchell

Gary Allen Mitchell passed away February 26, 2010, at the age of 55, following a long, hard fought battle with cancer. He is survived by his wife of 27 years, Susan; daughter, Whitney Griffin and husband Chad, Republic; daughter, Chelsea Mitchell, Springfield; his parents, Marlin and Alice Mitchell, Benton, Ky; brother, Rodney Mitchell, wife Tami, and their daughter Alyssa, Huntsville, Ala.; sister Cheryl Mitchell, Indianapolis, Ind.; brother Bill Mitchell and wife Renee, Virginia Beach, Va.; grandmother Irene Astin, St. Petersburg, Fla.; cousin, Marcy Leamon and husband Mark, Fort Wayne, Ind.

Gary was a lifelong educator. He spent most of his career with the Billings and Republic School Districts. Throughout his career, he served in several different capacities ? classroom teacher, counselor, and high school principal. Outside the classroom, Gary coached several sports, including baseball, softball, basketball, and football. Throughout the years, Gary impacted the lives of hundreds of student athletes, stressing fundamentals and hard work.

Gary loved sports, especially baseball and golf. He played college baseball for Missouri State University (formerly Southwest Missouri State) and was an integral part of the 1978 team that went to the College World Series. After his playing days were over, he became an umpire. He umpired hundreds of college games, including several Regionals and a World Series. Gary and Susan enjoyed golfing ? it would be nothing for them to play 36+ holes in a day.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m., Tuesday, March 1, 2011 in Meadors Funeral Home, Republic. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Wednesday, in the funeral home with Reverends Frank Stark and Marlin Mitchell officiating. Burial will follow in Danforth Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations be made to the Harvest Hill Baptist Church or St. John's Hospice, in care of the funeral home.

On this day, February 22, 2022 I can remember Gary fondly. He would be so proud of both of his daughters and Susan seeing how they have not only survived but thrived. And now he has a beautiful grandaughter to carry on his legacy. Gary loved his family and guided them with loving arms for their future. Gary was respected by many and he will never be forgotten.

I will never forget working with Gary in Billings! Such a nice man! One year when we teachers had a lot of changes and new rules especially involving lunch time he very kindly and at the risk of getting in trouble provided the teachers a table complete with tablecoth, candles, etc! How cool! I also remember that he always had a carousel horse figurine in his office...I had left it in the teachers lounge to go to a new home with other items I no longer wanted! I was disappointed when you didn't get the elementary principal job at Billings...you deserved it Gary and would have been a great one! The O'Toole's will miss you! My heart goes out to your family! Love Karen O'Toole

This is one of the few times in my life I have thought of Gary and not laughed or smiled. He was a wonderful friend who loved his family and loved life. I never had a conversation that did not involve laughter or an amusing story. Men like Gary are truly one of life's treasures. This week I mourn, but my memories of Gary will brighten many of my future days. I love you and miss you my fiend, My condolences to Susan and his daughters who he bragged on constantly, and with good reason. You were blessed with a wonderful husband and father. May peace find you soon.

Mr. Mitchell was one of the most caring and considerate teacher's that I have had. If it was not for him then I would not be able to graduate with my class. There have been so many days after school that I would stay after with him to make up a class. He had a very gentle soul that helped every one he could. He never let anyone see that he was in pain. I will miss him dearly. Rest In Peace Mr. Mitchell.

Gary Mitchell's heart was full of love and compassion for the students and peers he worked with. It did not matter if it was in the classroom or on the baseball field. Working with Gary at E-III I witness his compassion at work. As my son played baseball for Republic, I also witnessed his support and guidence on the field. Then sharing a love for the sport I was privileged to experience his friendship and conversations concerning our love of baseball. I mourn the loss of a good friend, but am convienced he has been welcomed into his Father's house that Gary was a witness to everyday! God bless the family. Melody Stevens (Republic, MO)
