John Barrett Hamilton

Springfield - John Barrett Hamilton died January 31, 2018 at the age of 75, at home surrounded by his family. John grew up in Emporia, Kansas and graduated from Emporia High School. He also graduated from Kansas State University (Manhattan) with a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering and a commission as a 2nd Lieutenant (Army ROTC) in 1965. While at university, he joined Alpha Kappa Lambda Fraternity and served one term as Iota chapter president. During summer breaks from university, he worked as a preliminary route surveyor for the Kansas Highway Department traveling throughout the state. Upon graduation, he was immediately called to active duty in the US Army Corps of Engineers. Following the Engineering Officer's Basic Course at Fort Belvoir, VA, he was assigned as a Construction Engineer/Platoon Leader to Co C, 4th Engineering Battalion (Combat), 4th Infantry Division at Fort Lewis, WA. From his arrival there until mid-1966, he was a cadre officer training recruits as proficient combat soldiers and military construction specialists. Upon completion of those training cycles, the entire 4th Infantry Division was deployed to the central highlands of Vietnam. During his Vietnam tour he attained the rank of 1st Lieutenant and became the Co C Executive Officer. Upon returning to the US, and being honorably discharged from active duty, he joined a large Kansas City consulting engineering firm where he worked primarily on municipal water supply and wastewater management projects throughout the US. He also worked outside the US for the international arm of that company in the early to mid-1970s. John was a licensed Professional Engineer in Missouri and Kansas. He and his family relocated to Springfield, MO in 1978 where he joined a consulting engineering firm providing services primarily in southwest Missouri and southeast Kansas. John ultimately joined Scott Consulting Engineers (another Springfield firm) in the late 1980s and early 1990s. He was the Department Head of the Environmental Department at Scott when he retired in 2002.

John was also well versed in various aspects of individual financial planning (estate planning, trusts, taxation, investing, portfolio management, and insurance).

John and his wife, Kathy, were married in Kansas City in 1972. They lived in Dallas, Texas and then San Juan, Puerto Rico where there daughter, Jennifer was born. They returned to Kansas City and a couple of years later their son, Thomas was born. Their final move was to Springfield, MO in 1978.

John's parents, Barrett A. Hamilton and Ellin L. Hamilton, of Emporia, KS, predeceased him as did his brother, Philip Hamilton of Concord, CA.

John is survived by his wife, Kathy S.
